I'll go for a small price drop this time round to help stimulate growth.

£459 for the 16GB version, £559 for the 32GB and £350 for this new 'cheap' base model.

Stimulate Growth !?!?! - The iP4 was sold out for months after release and they are still selling like hot cakes even now ;)

My guess is the price will go up. If a 64GB model is released you'll probably be looking at £800.

I assume by stimulate growth he means "get them in to the hands of poor people". :p

And £800? Hahaha. No way.

I've also sold my iPhone 4 now but I will be giving it to him on Friday. Purchased on launch day for £599 and sold this week for £390 well over a year later which I don't think is too bad. How do I back everything from the phone to iTunes or my PC including contacts etc. If I do purchase the iPhone 5 can I re-sync everything to that, as it was on my iPhone 4? I have loads of apps, do I have to make a note of which apps I actually purchased so that I can download them again for free in future?

It is either the iPhone 5, Galaxy Note or Nexus Prime for me next I think, I'll probably end up buying the one that comes out first...

Do we have any idea if we're looking at just a black version, black and white versions, or even more different colours a'la iPod Nano?

Even if its not October the 14th it won't be far off that date.

October time has been rumoured for months ever since WWDC was bereft of any iPhone stuff

Over the last year Apple have hit a brick wall for market share in Europe (~20%) and the US.
It's a growth industry so they're still selling tons but most new smartphone owners/symbian switchers are getting Android handsets. Even RIM have gained more share over the last year than Apple in the EU (only by <1% but still... :D)

This is a great opportunity to make hay whilst the sun shines, as they did in 08 by dropping the 3G price.

Are you sure about that? I can understand Symbian people going Android but new smartphone owners? Surely those people are one of the best candidates for an iPhone.

Ah, I guess you probably aren't factoring in price with that? Apple aren't ever going to be able to dominate the entire market because they won't sell phones for £50-100.
