I know they have this policy in place, but only over the last week or so has it been effecting me.

I can't play online on XBOX as my ping is roughly 40 and download 2mbps (should be 10mbps).

Worth me phoning them up to complain or time to swap ISP?

I can get on with the speed reduction etc, but the way it stops XBOX Live from functioning is unacceptable.
 
Are you breaking the policy and hitting the limits?

Schedule any downloads for after the times. You can complain, and see what they say. It may be a fault.

I would not swap provider, you would be going to ADSL

that is quite acceptable really, 15GB during restricted times, unlimited outide of those times

unless i am reading it wrong :confused:
 
1.5GB during the day and 750MB in the evening.

All I can say is that I am not a HUGE downloader, and that from 6PM till 11PM I am getting a super high ping and a 2mbps download speed.
 
Gimped speeds even during the day? Wow that sucks.

In what way? They clearly tell you what you can and cannot do.
My fair use policy (30mb) is 10gb throughthe day, and 5gb at night. Thats 15gb per day in fair useage (excluding the "free" hours) I have never ever been restricted. If you really honestly can say you download more than that, then it is more than likely downloading torrents, newsgroups etc.
Even then, why not download through the night, and stop being greedy. That way there are no restrictions, and everyone is happy.
 
40ms and 2Mbit speed alone will NOT break any xbox functionality... assuming its fairly consistant latency, also most games use far far less than 1Mbit let alone 2Mbit for playing online.

does this still happen if you've downloaded within the limits given ?

as Rroff mentions even that with the speeds/pings you have it shouldn't affect your xbox.

if the low speed happens during those hours and it isn't due to capping (ie you havent downloaded anything) it could be due to the isp usage in your area at those times.


by all means phone them and ask them to check the connection.

might be worth checking the virgin forum to see if other people in your area are having the issues.


might also be worth posting your router stats and checking them during a time when the line is ok and when it dips to 2mb.
 
Router stats wont show anything, and posting modems stats is unlikely to show anything as the problem is not all the time so it's either capping or UBR overutilization.

never see any harm in taking stats router/modem or otherwise, i did see that its not all the time and the likely hood it is either capping or the ubr, just a backup as its likely virgin would check them if he places a call anyway, so at least he can have details from a quiet period and when it goes belly up.
