Cheap fan speed control?

Ok so after the troubles I have been having with my PC I ended up only connected the necessities to the PSU today, so no case fans and omg it was almost silent! I genuinely had to check that it was turned on because it was that silent!

so what is the cheapest way to throttle back my case fans?

I think I have seen a cable before that connects to the CPU fan controller and splits off so that case fans can connect to it too. So the case fans would increase/decrease in speed the same as the CPU cooler making everything a lot quieter when I am not in a game?

I have a Cooler Master HAF 932, it has an intake on the front and side and exhaust fans on the back and top of the case just in case that helps anyone :)

Sorry I should have said, at the moment the case fans are just plugged into a molex cable run from the PSU so they are on 100% all the time. I don't think that speedfan can change that? I will have to look when I get home as looking at my mobo manual online I see there is a "chassis fan" connecter on the mobo, will have to see if I can connect one to that and connect all the others to that connection somehow too :)

Do the old voltage mod on them.

By fiddling the wires the fans connect to in the molex to you can get 5, 7 or 12V.

In a molex the pins are: 12V, Ground, Ground and 5V.

12V = 12V + Ground
7V = 12V + 5V (the difference between them is +7V so that's what the fans will see)
5V = 5V + Ground

At the moment your fans will be on 12V, rearrange the wires to get what you want.

The fans may not start up if you put them on 5V, the voltage may be too low. Same goes for 7V but that's less likely.

Can't get any cheaper than this but you don't get any fine tuning. You have 2 or 3 speeds and that's it.

That looks a little scary. Don't think I wanna go snipping at wires lol

If I can't find anything else I might give it a go . . . worse case scenario . . . I blow my self up :D haha

No cutting of wires is needed.

A molex plug is a plastic holder for 4 pins each with a wire crimped in.

All that holds the pins into the plastic is a tiny metal springy arm that catches in the plastic after the pin is pushed in.

You hold down the springy arms on the pin so you can pull each out, you then rearrange them to get the volts you want and push the pins back in again.

Worst case scenario is you rage over the pins being so fiddly.

Hmm I am of for 2 weeks after this week so I may well have to have a play around and see if I cant make my gaming rig as silent as a HTPC :p
