Hi,

Start my new job next week which means my commute changes from 4 miles each way to about 25.

Therefore looking to replace my 12 year old Nissan Almera !! Very tempted to get the Audi A1, ideally need a smallish car due to where I live.

Only issue is that the A1 at a decent ish spec is going to cost about £18k which is a LOT of money for the car really....

I'm sure you guys will recommend cars like Golf's / Focus's but I really think I won't be able to park it where I am :(

lol, it is just REALLY narrow and I've scuffed the wheels a load of times and have to do a 3 point turn at the end of the road.

Basically my neighbour has a Yaris, so that gives you an idea. Suppose it's one of the down sides of living about 200 meters from town.

Nissan Almera
Length 4,120 mm (162.2 in)
Width 1,690 mm (66.5 in)
Height 1,395 mm (54.9 in)

Audi A1
Length 3,954 mm (155.7 in)
Width 1,740 mm (68.5 in)
Height 1,416 mm (55.7 in)

VW Golf Mk6
Length 4,199 mm (165.3 in)
Width 1,779 mm (70.0 in)
Height 1,479 mm (58.2 in)

well you know what they say .... inch wider huh :p

I did actually have a Golf as a loan car for a few weeks and, yup the g/f scratched the alloys :p

I thought the A1 was actually a brilliant little car, but there is no chance in hell I'd be paying "new" prices for one. Maybe in a year or two when they have come down somewhat, but then I'd want one in the spec of the courtesy car I had yesterday, which comes out to around £25k :(

1.4 TFSI 185PS S-Line S-Tronic.

yeah just seems a crazy amount of money especially when it hardly comes with anything.

Looking at Golfs now, 2.0 Tdi a good place to start ??

Oh and what about Audi A3's ?

Audi A1 is a nice car, not too keen on the looks but is very expensive for what pretty much is a tarted up Polo/Ibiza/Fabia.

Golf is a far better shout.

Whilst theoretically it may be a "tarted up" Polo platform car, it's worlds apart from the interior quality of any of the other brands (VW/SEAT/Skoda). Feels like a completely different car inside, and feels like a different car to drive also.

By no means do I feel that this makes the £20,000+ purchase price of a well specced one "worth it", but it's leagues apart from the other cars that share it's platform. For instance, it shares more switchgear and infotainment electronics with the current generation A8 than it does with any of it's sister vehicles.

Agree on some points, the interior definatly and yes some of the extras are very nice however the driving experience is not very different at all.

I have driven the Polo (1.2 se), Ibiza Cupra (1.4 TSI), Polo GTI (1.4TSI) and the A1 S-Line (1.4TSI).

All great cars but the extra premiums being asked for does beg the question of "is this really work £3-4K more?"

I am a little biased however considering my latest purchase ;)

As I said, I feel that the A1 is definitely overpriced, but there is no denying that it's far better.

Then again, I feel that the Polo, Ibiza and Fabia are also overpriced.
