In the new am3 mobos is the 990 chipsets or will I loose performance ?

For best performance you need to operate the RAM in dual channel mode.

With 3 sticks you'll end up with a pair in dual channel mode and a stick in single channel mode or all 3 sticks may operate in single channel mode.

For best performance I'd use 2 sticks or find a matching single stick and use 4.

ah to make it clear its triple channel memory , does that just mean there is 3 sticks , and i can still add a 4th and it will work ok ?

Just make sure it's exactly the same symbol on that fourth stick.

It's not triple channel memory.

It's a set of three sticks sold together for use on triple channel motherboards.

If you add another matching stick you'll be able to use them in dual channel mode on a dual channel motherboard.
