R.E.M. have announced that they have broken up after 31 years together. "As lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band," the band said in a statement on their official website today. "We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished."

Great band, really like quite a bit of their stuff. Sad to see them go!

They've not been so interesting lately, but Automatic, Out of Time, New Adventures and some others from a while back are great albums.

I was lucky enough to see them in Hull 2005, great band but would have loved to seen them much earlier in their career. Their legacy will be some brilliant songs and anthems.

Gutted. :(

Saw them live in 2007 in Manchester, and they were just as epic live as they always were live.

'Around the Sun' was the only blot on the landscape. Up and Reveal, taken on their own merit, are both excellent albums, but they are very different from their pre-Bill Berry music. At My Most Beautiful is one of my favourite ever songs.

Some band... they were supported by Radiohead, The Cranberries and a very young Sleeper in Milton Keynes in 1995. Not bad for what was a college radio band for their first 5 or 6 albums.

Their opening album sold around 200,000, yet was Rolling Stone's album of 1983.... ahead of Thriller.

Oh well. Give it another 10 years and they'll be coming back for another tour. ;)

Last 10 years or so haven't been exactly sparkling, but they have done some fantastic stuff over the years.

One of my favourite bands of all time. Over thirty years, they managed to keep their unique sound whilst changing with the times and keeping it fresh. They have never produced an album that didn't have at least one incredible and timeless song.

Most of all they were one of the old-school acts that would tour every album and it's in those live performances that they shined. So much energy, so much passion. More creative spirit than any fifty modern acts combined, they will be sorely missed and forever remembered.

Legen....waitforit...DARY!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for a reunion tour, five years from now!

Early REM songs (especially from Out Of Time and Automatic) associate with some special memories and people I've known, but I never really connected with their stuff after Reveal. I'm sad to see them go.
