M-Audio AV40 Studiophile active monitors - how good are they?

Hi all,

I've been thinking of getting a pair of active studio monitors to work on my mixes, but the problem is that my budget is quite low (£200 at the very most) and for that price it's almost impossible to get proper flat, neutral-sounding ones.

I've read very good things about the M-Audio AV40s though, and I'd be interested to hear first-hand opinions on them. Of course, any alternative options are welcome.

Also, I'm quite used to working with a subwoofer and I'm afraid that not using one would change my sound radically. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance!

I'm in the same boat, looking for low budget monitors. I've currently been looking at the some models from ESI. Would like to see some user opinions also!

Hello!

They are very nice indeed :)

One of the best sound speaker sets you can get without buying seperates and an amp.

The BX5A D2 is simply superb though, I myself have the BX8A D2 but will not be getting thise quite yet until we see some solid interest on the current line up.

The stock is arriving the first week of october so if you plan on dropping an order itll be the new MKII that will ship on the AV30 and AV40s :)

Hey Andrew, thanks a lot for your answer! It's great to know that they are as good as I'd been told, but would it be possible to have a bit more specific info? Like, are they tonally neutral (don't think they'll be 100%, but hey, gotta ask!) or how deep does the bass go?

As to your recommendation, I've found the BX5 D2 (no "A") and the BX5A Deluxe (no "D2"). Are any of these the same as the ones you mention?

theyre not great but good for entry level the sound in them isnt very flat or true, your better off going with rockit rp6/8 or yamama hs 50/80m the yamaha hs 50 are industry standard and are around 240 £ they accept xlr and jack input the difference is though youd need an interface or mixer. if i was you and your wanting something that sounds relaly nice and you dont have the money yet to go interface and studio grade monitors id save up a little, you wont be dissapointed.

Regarding the subwoofer, its the same for everything really i think, in the sense all monitors go into the back of the sub woofer and then to your interface ( am i right) ? so would be the same for you if you mean youvre already got one, this is how it is with the yamaha.

Hmm, interesting! I think I could save up a bit and stretch my budget to the Yamahas. Besides, I already have an external interface (M-Audio Fast Track Pro), so that wouldn't be a problem for me. Thanks a lot, Gary! :)

We use the BX8As in a dual purpose AV / Conference room.
They are set to about 10 o'clock on the volume dial. Without bass treatment, this is enough to fill a 5m x 12m x 3m (WxDxH) room with large conference desk in the centre.
The sound is not especially neutral, with the low end being prominent. Not quite in subwoofer ranges but punchy enough.

It's connected through a 10m cable with 2.5mm plug (PC / Laptop end) -> TRS plugs. They might be phono plugs with TRS adapters on them - I can't remember! I remember it being seriously ghetto but regardless, the sound is decent.

The NS50s mentioned are the industry standard for monitors, which doesn't happen without a good reason ;)
