Question about AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition

I was looking at this weeks deals and see the AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition on sale for £85.99. Now I have an old AM2 motherboard, the Asus MN2PV-MX which my son uses for gaming and on the Asus Website under the supported CPU list it lists the AMD Phenom II X4 945 as compatible from Bios version 5005 on and as the 955 Black Edition is effectively the same processor as the 945 but with a default multiplier of 16 instead of 15 and the multiplier is unlocked I wonder if I could use this CPU in my board setting the multiplier to 15 to extend the useful life a bit more. I have tried to find a 945 but nobody has them in stock anymore.

Any thoughts?

The 945 that your board can support is the 95W version (the 955 and normal 945 are 125W), so it's unlikely the 955 would work.

Unless you can clock it down to the 3GHz and undervolt it, then it might.

What CPU is in the board atm?

It is likely but not guaranteed that you could undervolt, most amd processors at stock seem to run at -0.05V to -0.1V offset. You can also as said run it at 945 clock speed reducing the multiplyer.

Other option then is to get a Athlon II X4 640 or the AMD Phenom II X4 840 (which is actually an Athlon II bar name).

Both are 95W CPU's, and would be a fair bit faster than the current CPU.

Though not as much of a bargain as the 955BE.

The AMD Phenom II X4 840 isn't shown as supported for my board either though the 740 is. It was just the price is the same as the Athlon II X4 640 which isn't in stock anyway and the 740 is nowhere to be found. I suspect the 840 with a locked multiplier may not work.

In theory the 840 should work, as it's really just a slightly higher clocked 640, the CPU itself is exactly the same bar 200MHz.

You'll never find a 740, they are like rockinghorse poo, and 720's are quite difficult to get hold of these days (certainly won't get one new, it'll be 2nd hand markets only).

Best bet is the 640 (3GHz)/645(3.1GHz), or risking the 840(3.2GHz).

The 640 can be had for ~£72, the 645 ~£75, and the 840 ~£78.
