Will you be needing an OS? If so this is a tight budget, is there any chance of £350 or is your budget set in stone?
There has been a thread similar to this made and answered here is the link however this user does not need an OS.

Yeah, definitely what ive learnt :P

In the long run you spend more time and money on upgrading stuff you should have got in the first place and before you know it, it's end of line and prices rocket...then you spend your nights on flea bay endlessly watching auctions!:( In all serioiusness, OP try to scrounge a bit more together, or perhaps look at AM3 Athlon II Tri Core paired with a GTX460. You'll at least have some sort of upgrade path in the future with Phenom II Hex Core or if you get a AM3+ board, Bulldozer.

Below is a slightly cheaper AMD option.

Won't be as quick as i3 2100 but motherboard will take Bulldozer CPU's in the future. If you can get together enough for i3 this'd definatley be the better option.

+1. This as a minimum. Anything less isn't worth it and IMO would be a waste of time.

Thanks for the awesome response everyone. I will take your suggestions onboard. This 'rig' will be for a very light gamer who only likes racing sims and was after a small machine that he could use to play these sims. Im sure the budget can be stretched a bit too.

yup. Check up on the requirements, budget, and some components he'd like, if he has a preference. Would be good to know if he has any particular games in mind.

Well hes not bothered about AMD v Intel, he just wants to play and 'as long as the graphics are good and it dont stutter' were his words. Not too bothered about sound too in terms of having a super duper sound card etc.

Games he's looking to play are Dirt 3 & F1 2011.

And the budget can be about 350 - 375.
