Look up: Satellite on it's way down

If I take my English car to America and an American steals it, have they broken the law?

Millions perhaps billions of dollars worth of equipment is in that satellite, even crushed by the atmosphere, its still NASA's, for all you know it has something classified in it, in which case it gets even worse.

The UK government will simply go along with it, since the US could use it as leverage.

For the love of god, this has nothing to do with conspiracies, its hardly unbelievable that the US might just want government property back.

Extra credit: Have they broken English law, or American law?

I know nothing about law, I will have a wild guess at both.
What I am asking is, if it came down in Russia and the authorities did not care about it, what would happen?

It's not even a case of the UK government "going along with it". The UK government recognises the sovereignty of the US, recognises American property law, and has an extradition treaty with the US. There would have to be some pretty weird scenario for it to land in a country and for that country not to recognise America's right to retrieve their property and - if needs be - to prosecute any thieves. You'd basically be talking about it landing in a country that doesn't recognise the USA as a sovereign nation, or one without an extradition treaty who were looking to wind up America, or one with property/theft law so vastly different that it wouldn't be recognised as a theft.

To be honest, as long as you keep it hidden, i suppose its a non issue.

Frankly as soon as the US get a whiff that someone has stolen their things, they usually get angry.
