1.5gb VRAM enough for 3 monitors?

Hi,

Planning to get 3 of those Samsung 3D monitors (1080p) and i plan to use 3D (nvidia one - not inbuilt). I have a GTX 580 ATM and have been offered another one for £285 (EVGA SC :D)

However, i want decent FPS (45 min) whilst gaming and i want it to handle anything with 3 monitors, 3D

Would the 1.5gb VRAM be enough or should I get the GTX 570 2.5gb's? I did have my heart set on them earlier :(

Advantage of the 570's are that they have power connectors at the back and displayport connectivity.

Any opinions, charts etc are greatly appreciated from anyone (yes, even you Harmony ;))

There's a fairly high likelihood that i will upgrade to the next gen of cards, but not right away :)

Thanks

I have 3 24" monitors (1920x1200 each) and they could handle "surround" OK with 1.5GB 580SLI but ran into VRAM issues with AA turned up

Ive swapped them out for 3GB versions and the performance is noticeably better

Bear in mind that 3D over surround roughly halves the frame rate its really gonna depend on what game your playing and what your aspirations are for eye candy .......

Mainly for FSX and counterstrike :D

So would you say the 3gb's are worth it? and do you think 2.5gb VRAM will be ok?

I should imagine CS would be OK, not sure on FSX

As for 2.5 v 3GB who knows :P sorry I can't comment but im sure it will come down to what AA and graphical settings your gonna want to play with .................

well, me being me...

Full settings :D:p

I also want to play arkham city :D:p

Another thing is the 570HD's have displayport. Will it be useful with THIS monitor?

I would say with expectations of 3D on triple screen and full eye candy you *MAY* get your ~45 FPS but im not sure as I don't have the games to give them a try in surround and halve the FPS :P

Im not sure what advantage the DP has over HDMI (n00b, sorry) - but its not just the 570s, my 580s have a DVI, HDMI and DP connector ;)

Take a look at the benchmarks here and here.

A GTX 590 or HD 6990 struggle to produce playable frame rates over three screens in some games.

Throw in the hit for 3D and the results would be even worse.

Thanks surveyor!
I guess it would be okay with two heavily overclocked 570's?
And of worst comes to worst, I cam use the monitor unbuilt 3D conversion.

What's your opinion surveyor? 570s or 580s?

It's a difficult question but my gut feeling would be that your best chance of getting anything like playable frame rates with 2 GPU's would be with 3GB GTX 580's or 2.5GB GTX 570's.

1.25 or 1.5GB of VRAM possibly just doesn't cut it at 5760x1080.

If you're planning on water cooling then you'll have to choose your cards with care to ensure you can get full cover blocks.

Already checked - will be getting some EN full covers if I get the 570's :D

I was earlier planning to get the 570's but then the EVGA 580 for £285 came up and I've been hesitating. Might try getting the 3Gb 580's but then I'd lose out on the DP - is DP worth it for those monitors?

I don't think there's any quality difference between DP and DVI.

DP cables are a bit neater than dual link DVI cables (which you'll need for 120Hz/3D).

Edit:

I am now your FWEINNDDDDD!

IIRC DP carries up to 60 FPS and DVI 45?

General question here, anyone else leave their DVIs unscrewed?

Dual link DVI will run 1920x1080 120Hz/3D no problem.

I have my DVI connection screwed in for my permanent setup.

If I'm testing a build I just plug the cable in without securing it.

I ALWAYS forget to unscrew the DVI cable when moving my comp so I now leave it unscrewed:)

Regarding 3 screens, will all three screens work in perfect harmony only in a Game?

How does it work if I'm just browsing the web?
Eg, can I do wikipedia on one, word on the other and 3D porn on the last? :D:p
