It's like an email thing :)

I got email, access to calendars, files on my MacBook Pro and could locate my iPhone 4 via my MacBook Pro and lock / delete it through Mobile Me but it came at a price.

You're getting all that + more for free now, as long as you have the new mobile operating system, or that's how I understood it.

so basically free for ios5 users?

I think so, I'm not 100% sure how it will work, I've not read too much in to it, I'm still using my Mobile Me account at the minute.

It's free as part of iOS 5. I think you get 5GB free and then have to pay for extra space.

Correct. My understanding is:

Up to 5GB...Free
Up to 15GB...£14 per year
Up to 25GB...£28 per year
Up to 55GB...£70 per year

Hopefully I'll be able to turn off sync for music - otherwise it'll get very expensive (none of my library comes from the iTunes store).

Your purchased music, apps, books and Photo Stream don't count against that storage. iTunes match is sort of a separate service and that costs $25 for up to 20,000 songs, but that service isn't coming to the UK any time soon.

So, no need to worry ;)

I think Apple will only be releasing the 4S this year. There are plenty of 4S parts popping up in the supply chain, with no sign of redesigned iP5 parts and no indication that Apple has ordered any.

Plus I highly doubt that Apple would release two iPhones at once. It already has the ability to repackage the iP4 as its low-end product, and Apple doesn't need or want to offer three handsets at the same time. Assuming there's only one new iPhone, it will almost certainly be the 4S, for which lots of parts and even a part-assembled device have been seen in the wild.

I agree that there won't be three handsets at once, but I think the '4S' will simply be a direct replacement for the current iPhone 4, they'll also release the iPhone 5 and the new updated '4S' will become the cheaper option, like the 3GS was when the iPhone 4 came out.

If they do only release a '4S' they will have lost me as a customer, I will definitely be looking elsewhere come contract renewal time (November).

If you think about it, once you bought all those applications for your iphone you wouldn't want to change it for another type of phone for example android. just not worth it.

I've not bought many apps at all, most of what I do with my phone is covered by the standard apps and free apps, so that's a moot point. People will lose patience with Apple eventually.

If the 4s was really all there was, I think I would sell my 3gs, pick up a second hand 4 and go on a rolling contract till next years effort.

It would appear that you didn't read my post. :)

Given the distinct lack of anything showing up in the supply chain, I doubt there will be an iP5, but they could announce one to follow later, or I could be completely surprised.

If they are only releasing an iPhone 4S, there was really no need to delay it into October. They'd just be wasting their time and their customers time. I think the reason we're not seeing much leaked is because Apple have tightened up massively since the last debacle. There have been several leaks showing dimensions and a new design which would suggest an iPhone 5 is on the cards. I reckon all the recent iPhone 4 with A5 processor leaks are purely dev units, to enable programming for ios5.
