Is the Billion 7800n the best option for £115

I'm looking to get a new adsl router to replace the PlusNet supplied Thompson 585 as i've had lots of trouble with it.

I have been keeping an eye on this section for a while and notice a few people recommend the Billion as a great router.

I'm just wondering if its still the best available or is there something newer that beats it.

I am looking for stability, and good wifi coverage I currently have 1 wired and 6 wireless devices connecting.

Well i hope so because i just took the plunge and it will be replacing a DG834G.
Funny thing is soon as i ordered it (saturday) my netgear synced at the highest i have ever seen it go in the many years ive had it.

I will tell you how mine goes when it arrives this week sometime :)

My first 7800n was DOA, the 2nd just did not log on to o2. So that went back.

I ordered this the other day TP-Link Wireless-N 300Mbps ADSL2+ Modem/Router (TD-W8960N)

Arriving tomorrow.

I have a TP-Link TL-WA701ND(the cheapest one) I forgot I had it actually, its in my shed running as a bridge. I love it for the price I paid it was about £15 lol.

I'm so tempted by the 7800n after seeing peoples broadband speeds have increased, I use a Draytek Vigor 2820n at work and I really like it, but its a few quid more.

I've been holding out on the Billion hoping i would see one on offer somewhere.

I got a 7800n supplied free by my ISP. I'm on a long line and it's rock solid stable even with the SNR margin set to 3dB, and this dips to just above 2dB overnight (my Cisco used to vary from 9dB in the day to 3dB overnight).

Wireless wise it was pretty good - much better than my WNR2000.

Found a couple of odd things, like you can't disable the firewall - had to set incoming and outgoing ANY-ANY rules - and you can't run SNMP on the LAN side unless you enable WAN access too. Other than that, it's really good.

Could you say it's faulty and claim another one ;)

I have that very same tp link router mate, had it nearly 2 weeks now and cant fault it one bit! i have a really long unstable line and since installing this i have had sync for 5 days solid normally would drop every 24hrs. Really easy to setup and a much nicer price compared to the billion all be it it does not have some of the features but if your not worried about gigabit ports etc then this is a great buy

I've been through many many modems, trying to find one that works for my rural line. Finally, with the Billion 7800N, I'm really happy. Despite having a long line, I'm currently getting a speed of 5.4Mbps.

I've produced my own page for the Billion 7800N, which contains information on how you can tweak it further. The link is in my sig below.

What are your attenuation and snr to achieve that speed mate? :)
I am still deciding if it is worth it for my line.Got an attenuation down of 60-63,it varies a bit and get a synch of 3072 down with sky llu

3.5 dB SNR margin downstream (set with the SNR margin tweak and stable)
Line attenuation downstream 56.0 dB
Currently connected speed is 5824 kbps (actually higher than I said in the above post).
I used to have problems with disconnections, but now the modem stays connected for weeks at a time.

Thanks for the info :)
Still thinking about getting one as the price is high,(Don`t want to spend £100+ on a router that gives me no more speed/stability than the others that i have tried) :)

Bookmarked looks useful thanks, I wish I could get those speeds, I will order one when I get paid and i'll be back with hundreds of questions for you :p,

keep an eye on this thread.

I've got a 7800n, think it needs an RMA though as it errors badly on my ADSL line and syncs around 30% lower than "inferior" routers.

Well ive had my billion running for a few days now and i am synced at 3872 which is a good 400-800kbps faster than my DG384G use to give me.

I will have to wait a few days for my bras profile to go up but hopefully i will have a stable 0.5/1mbit speed upgrade :)

Also i really do like the QoS feature, impressed so far :D

You won't be dissapointed, you can tell it is a quality piece of kit because my pings online use to fluctuate twice as much compared to the 7800n. :)

Just to add I received a 7800n today, after long time usage of netgear routers mainly DG834G on my 5.5km distance line. DS attenuation down from 63 to 61.5 db, resulting in ~450kbps higher sync (previously sync around 3900 now synced at 4362, 6db snr). Also used to ping 14-15ms average to bbc.co.uk, with the 7800n it's down to 12-13ms, just nice to know it's a little more responsive.

Also partly bought it as I'll still be able to use it when fttc is available in my area and I can get fibre, which is a nice bonus. Very happy with it.

Got mine a few hours ago, still setting things up like fixed ip addresses for my networked pcs.
First impression is i have wasted my money, atttenuation has risen by 3 DB :(
still too soon to say if it is a POS for me anyway.
Complicated/loads of settings to get my head around am going to have to read the manual lol :D

Have a read on that. You can change your SNR and try and get it lower. I've got the 7800N myself and I mange to get from under 3mb too 6.50ishMB even though it did drop after abit to 5.60mb but it's still a good speed.
