Can't afford cat medication anymore...

If you have housing benefit (Council house) or know someone who does, then normally you get free pet care at PDSA (I think it was 2 pets per household). So like people say, go see if there is a PDSA around your area and find someone who lives in a council house :D
 
change vets. explain the situation to them and tell them you are looking for a vet who will either write scripts for free or write them for a larger volume. Most practices want the custom in this climate and will probably come to some arrangement.

Then explain to your old vets why you are leaving and will no longer be recommending them to anyone you know.
 
Sounds to me like that cat has quite a lot of problems and without the med will be in a lot of pain,You could try giving her away but explaining what she needs,I doubt anyone will help you out with fees....probably the only other alternative would be to put her asleep. :/

...wouldn't it be considerably cheaper to get a new cat.

Oh I know the PDSA is, I had , it would seem wrongly assumed they would be compensated by the state if having housing benefit qualified you for 'free' pet care with them. Since it's very rare to ever really get anything for free.

Just an easy way of them identifying poor people, you know how it is, if they let anybody use the PDSA it'd be full of horses before you knew it.
 
Take out health insurance on the cat and stage a suicide.

A ball of yarn, strangled himself to death.

It's a foolproof ploy!
 
I Deal with over 100 vets on a daily basis. 99.9% are in the business of saving lives some may be in it purely for the money.

What area are you in I will see If I can recommend a good one for you.

You could also take out Insurance NOW. And change vets.
Who's to know that your cat has been previously diagnosed with an illness. Sorry who's to know your great aunts cat blah blah blah.

Surely a good vet will know it is an existing condition that is being medicated?

And lets be honest, £60 on a cat is ridiculous, let it die and get a new one.
 
This is what happens when you restrict the sale of drugs to need a prescription, people get ripped off beause they can't just go direct to the retailer. Doesn't help that the government charge VAT on medication leading to more animal suffering.

I'm not familliar with animal pharmaceuticals but if you have experience in chemistry you can sometimes synthesise medications for much cheaper than you can buy them at the pharmacy.

Its not ridiculous at all if you have had the cat around for a long time and grown attached to it. I have two of the wee *******s running about the place and ive grown quite fond of them, to the detriment of my couch and some wallpaper! While Id be choking on my conflakes at a bill like that i dont think i could just kill em off and say "send in the next two please!"
 
Which area do you live in? If its in the midlands, the vets I use are very good.

One of my cats has diabetes and the cost would be around £80 a month for insulin + needles, thankfully he is insured for now (5k limit for life per condition) so when that runs out we'll be paying for it. In the mean time we're putting money away each month for when the insurance runs out, so it wont be as big of a hit

The vets even said to go online to find the medication/needles and special diet food cheaper, they charge £10 for the perscription, but as you said the meds can be over half the cost of buying direct from the vets

I was going to clip my cats balls off, when the vet asked for 50 to neuter the thing. Jesus christ, a simple crack of the nuts and bosh... no squirty squirty for him.
