All iPhone 5 speculation/rumours/wants thread

I find the 4s leaks almost too common, in the run up to the iPad2 there was nothing but a possible case design. It feels like the 4s is running second to something else in the secrecy stakes at apple.

Could be. Maybe selling the 4S as a drop-in replacement for the 4 could allow them to lower manufacturing costs by taking advantage of advances in technology.

If there is an iP5, though, it will have been an astonishingly good cover-up. This has to be one of the most anticipated consumer products ever. Dozens of tech sites, legions of market analysts and armies of Apple fans have been searching for over a year for any sign of iP5s or iP5 parts, and come up with nothing apart from a few dubious Chinese case designs. I know Apple will have got very security-conscious after the iP4 Gizmodo fiasco, but I doubt even they could manage this level of secrecy so late in the day.

Didn't they manage exactly this level of secrecy with the iPad2? I dont recall any leaks that turned out to be true other than a few chinese cases that did the rounds.
 
For some reason I am expect 4s, a small upgrade or spec bump and then the 5 in July. I of course no nothing though, just a hunch. The total lack of information about a 5 makes me feel this way.

I think we saw some prototypes that came very close to the proper look of the back casing but there was no evidence showing these designs were the genuine article upon until release or at least unveiling.

Of course they can manage it, they've learnt from past mistakes and will have ramped up security considerably.

The 4S will be the budget model, just like the 3GS is now. It may have some small improvements as well.

The only reliable iPhone 4 leak was because Gizmodo managed to get a testing unit off a dodgy employee. The iPad 2 was kept secret without any issues, a few fakes were made based on artist impressions from case designs, just like we're getting with the iPhone 5.

Apple have to release an iPhone 5, a 4S by itself simply will not do.

That could definitely be the reason we're seeing leaks of an iPhone 4 with an A5 chip. They could drop production of the A4 altogether and maybe disable 1 of the cores in the A5 chip inside the iPhone "4S". I imagine there would be huge savings if they only had to produce one chip type.

If you think about it though they just took the existing ipad and made it fit the leaked case/cutouts it doesnt imply any insider knowledge.

There could have been supply constraints that prevented an earlier release, which was rumoured at the time. Or they simply wanted to wait for iOS5 and iCloud, which were no where near ready in the summer, before releasing a new phone. Or they might have wanted to wait longer since Verizon only got the 4 at the beginning of this year.

We did get a part leak for the iPad 2 screen a month before it was announced though. Along with information leaks regarding specs and the fact that it had entered the production line.

If Apple's security is so tight then it does seem odd that people are managing to leak 4S parts, and that analysts have seen the 4S enter the production line but no trace of a redesigned model.

I'll be hoping that you're right, but I'm not expecting it.
 
The 4S appeals to me a lot tbh. The 4 does everything I need really so if the 4S is a slightly upgraded version in the same form-factor and is available at a decent discount over the 5 then it'll probably be that which I get. The fact that I can get a proper cradle for the 4/4S for the car is also a factor :)

The issue with this is, what if it's 8GB. I wonder if there will be an 8GB and 16GB version of the 4S. That low storage space could be a deal breaker.
 
I don't care as I have no need to use it for music or video storage, as I already have a 32GB iPod Touch in the car for that and 8GB is ample for apps. If it means it's cheaper, great :)
