Failed my driving test this week... How many attempts did it take you?

A Driving Test has little bearing on one's ability to drive?

riiight....

It doesn't, different situation and just different.
Everyone always says you learn to drive, once you've passed your test. There's a reason for that saying.

The more you are in a situation, the less nervous you get. Just human nature. You get use to the situation. Or at least handle it better.

absolute nervous wreck first time. got 3 minors on my second a few weeks later, parked it in the bay perfectly and he failed me because I didn't look over my shoulder as I reversed in. I could have killed someone apparently. I assume he has never seen a van before.

Passed 3rd time.

And a driving test is just a measure that you can pass the test, not a measure of your ability to drive. If that were the case then there wouldn't be so many terrible drivers on the roads.

I disagree, I bet most fails are down to nerves rather that lack of ability.

Not sure how you would find anything to back that up though. Maybe some national statistics?

A quick google of the top 10 reasons for failing a driving test all seem to indicate ability.

I wonder what a poll would show with

Have you ever had an crash you caused, if yes how many driving test attempts did you make?

And how does it indicate ability? You wont find stats for either. As the results for either is the same.

Nope and 3. 7 years driving.

I honestly doubt you could find a negative relationship to accidents caused per test attempt. I'd guess that a 17 year old who passes 1st time is more likely to have an accident than a 21 year old who passes 3rd time.

Also anecdotally everyone I knew at college that passed their tests at 17 have lost their licences and had to retake. All except one. And I went to one of the best (measured in results for students) state schools in the borough.

1st time for me,

4th time for my fiancée, Nerves is a big reason for people failing. She gets really bad with any tests no matter how small. She could drive fine with me etc but kept making silly mistakes when doing her test till she finally thought "sod it" and passed but with loads more minors than she got on her previous tests.

First time with 3 minors. I was expecting the test to last for around 40 mins or so but it was over and done with in 20 mins.

I drove out the village to a dual carrigeway, did 3 roundabouts then drove back to the test centre and did a reverse park there which was easy enough as i drove forward into one bay then just reveresed into another.
