Doing a finance check on a car?

Hi,

Went to see a car today, the car seemed all fine, MOT history checks out and did a text check and car is all in the clear, then when I looked at the v5 document, the car was still registered in the name of the previous owner, the current owner says he hasn't sent the v5 so it gets updated, but says his owned it for 8 months and bought it from an auction. All that raised some suspicions, but then it doesn't seem anything dodgy, the guy buys and sells cars in his private time and claims he didnt want to add another owner to it. So i'm just wondering is there any way to check if there car has outstanding fines, payments etc? Don't want to spend £25 odd money on a hpi check just for thr finance check, is there a cheaper option?

Also would you buy the car yourself in those circumstances?

Cheers

if it's a car he likes, it's at the right price and he hasn't yet found another one suitable, why burn your bridges with that one. The previous owner may have just been a lazy ******* and not bothered filling the paperwork in.

I was looking at an old cheap Mondeo on eBay and the seller sounds just like this.

Claims to have had the Mondeo for 6 months but doesn't have the V5. Seller says "They kept it when I went to tax it" and that "I will forward it once I get it back".

Sounds like another dodgy dealer pretending to be a private seller.

why would he if he sell the things, it's probably been sat on his forecourt (driveway) for 7 months..

Yea, I'm sure it has.

He's been driving it around registered in somebody elses name so he can spin a yarn when he flogs it on, like all the other dodgy geezas do. I doubt the previous owner filled in the section about selling to the trade?

I few people I know who buy and sell cars do this, not sure if it's legal or not, but it's 1 less owner on the log book I guess!

Take details of registered owner from V5, write to them and ask them to contact you?

Would be too long of a process, if there was a phone number to contact then would probably be worth ringing up.

He had the whole v5 document, including the bit that the owner whose selling is meant to post to dvla to make the change of ownership, which is odd, but then he said he bought it from auction. When I first asked him why his selling he said he bought a new car which is a volvo s40, he said he was a builder and has a truck in his driveway, his eastern european so I thought fair enough, then when we negotiating and the issue of the v5 came up he said he bought it from auction and buys and sells car, he had a laguna on his driveway for sale. But one thing I noticed is that engine was warm when I checked it even tho he claim he doesn't drive, maybe it was lemon, but the car was absolutely straight mechanically and everything seemed genuine, best car i've seen in the 6 months ive been hunting and it was cheap, so disappointing get frustrated at the car market. :(

But this guy had the v5 doc, all looked straight apart from the fact he didnt send it off to mark him as the new owner and i dont think it was stolen, but things like finance, fines are another issue which is what put me off. Funnily enough he was willing to go to the police station and get it checked out but then said he wouldn't negotiated on the price if we did, then walked off after a discussion claiming we were being really "difficult".

But if his had it that long then you would have expected him to get the v5 done? He said he hasnt driven it for a month which is around the same amount of time its been on sale for but claims his had it for 8 months. Weird guy, seems genuine but at the same time doesnt seem to give a straight story.

Nothing was filled in apart from the slip where he put his details in as the new owner, which is sort of pointless cos the actual part that matters wasnt filled in or sent out.

i thought you can get fined for not updating ownership details etc?

What a wasted day and so disappointing, thought i'd finally found a decent car at a reasonable price, was thinking of phoning him and going over to buy it 2moro if i can get the finance side checked out. But not really sure anymore. Hmmm

What car is it and for what price?

There's a reason why this car is cheep and it hasn't sold in 4+ weeks, there's too many questions over this car and I'd not bother.

2002 Honda Accord 1.8 Sport, 86k, part service history, 11months mot, 5months tax, top spec, £950.

I checked the car out and it's all in good nick, bodywork is top notch for age, and mechanically seemed straight, the previous owner going form the mot records did 10k a year, probably motorway miles. For the price it was really good, every other car in local ads are over priced junk. The car was £1300 first then price dropped presumably because he wants to sell quickly, or i guess maybe there somethings wrong, the timing belt hasn't been changed tho.

Part service history, being sold by one of those con-driveway-traders who ran around in it for months whilst pretending he was the previous owner, yea, good buy.
