Yesterday I made the decision that I am going to give being self-employed a shot.

Thinking about a lot things today but I can't wait till Monday so I can start sorting stuff out. :)

:D

Have you gone from being unemployed to "self employed" or did you grab the bull by the horns and quit your job to start your own business?

What area of self employment have you gone into???
I design, supply and fit kitchens and bathrooms and the building industry as a whole has gone very quiet over the last few days with the merchants I deal with mentioning a 30% drop in sales over the last week.
Going self employed with the economy in it's current state of uncertainty is not for the faint hearted in any field of expertise.
Good luck to you and I hope it works for you ;)

Well, I don't want to say specifically just incase some trigger happy mod is having a bad day because it might be deemed a competitor though I'm not setting up a shop more the services sort of thing. :)

I was under the impression that we've asked you, so it'd be okay. It's not like you've been advertising yourself directly. But yeah, pays to tread carefully I guess. Any mod care to clarify?

Well I read matt's (or rover dude as I know him :o ) and he is doing computer recycling and that was allowed but I don't know about this. It doesn't really matter here but I was thinking of calling the business, GD Computer Services.

Would grateful for any tips or anything anyone can share that would help. :)

I thought you were already self employed? You posted a while ago saying that you were an IT contractor?

Why are you waiting for tomorrow? Today is the place is to start!

edit: Sigma that's not even cool.

I find it a bit odd that people post these threads then give out no details whatsoever, better off not bothering posting in some cases. :p

Here's a link to get you going.

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/selfemployed/register-selfemp.htm

Then set up a 2nd Bank A/c just for "the business" - then take your drawings out of that. It's not essential, but it does make record keeping easier and keeps your business records separate from your personal accounts.

Make sure your serious about this though, as you will have to start paying class 2 NI straight away (unless you claim for exemption due to low profits ~5k iirc)

The link should explain a lot.

I went self employed in early 2009. If you can make money in a recession.. it will be easy when we pull out of it :)

I'm 28 now, and I did in Jan 2009, and it was the best decision I ever made, I was head of an IT department and doing pretty much everything, and in my spare time polishing up on java, perl etc, now i'm a freelance programmer and my time is my own.

I could never go back to working for somebody else.
