I'm planning on upgrading my GTX 460 to an HD 6950 but is there that much of a difference between the 1gb version and the 2gb.

I was originally going to SLI my 460 but then found out that my mobo (Gigabyte P55) is a crossfire board...Doh! (that's what i get for not researching it properly)

So I'm thinking get a single 6950 and go crossfire when they drop in price after the 7xxx series comes out.

Rest of my system is an i5 760, 8gb Corsair xms, Corsair AX 750w psu. Still running Win Vista 64bit.

2Gb.

There are already games that 'require' it.

Shogun 2
Dragons Age 2

No doubt countless other as well.

Plus if you went for xfire in the future you wouldnt be vram limited with 2x2Gb cards.

Have you checked your motherboard will run 2 cards at x16 or x8 speeds?

If it's one of the boards which runs the second slot at x4 then that may have a detrimental effect on performance.

yes thats correct, and personally, i wouldnt bother with the 2gb version.
the 2gb card will only help with higher resolutions, you will only gain a few fps over the 1gb card.

If you can easily afford it, then sure, go for the 2GB. Since you are making a thread about it I am assuming you can just about afford the 2GB. Like the guy near the top said, some games now require it and loads others will too. If you want to plan for the future a little then going for the 2GB wouldn't be a bad move.

@ gamerdude1989.

FYI your signature is too big.

4 lines of text only.

What is the signature for?

You may use a signature (commonly used in email messages) in your posts. You can specify in your profile a signature to use at the bottom of your posts. When you post, there is an option to use your signature. A signature may contain one or more images but they must fit within a box with maximum dimensions of 400 x 75 pixels (width x height) and with a maximum (combined) file size of 20k. Images containing mostly very large words or animated .gifs will not be permitted. You may also add 1 consecutive lines of normal or smaller text directly above or underneath the image with no spaces inbetween image and text. If no images are used then up to 4 consecutive lines of normal or smaller text is permitted. Do not pad out your text lines with blanks lines. A line of text is defined as having a maximum length of 400 pixels. If you want to turn the signature off in the future, you can come back and edit your post. If you have specified a signature in your profile, the box will be automatically ticked for you.
The forum Dons/Admins reserve the right to judge individual signatures, particularly those deemed to contain material of an adult or offensive nature. If the Dons/Admins think the signature is unsuitable for a family orientated forum, then it will be removed. If the user then replaces it without making changes, they will be suspended.

If you are going to do CrossfireX in the future then 2GB is a much better choice, especially if £20 cannot afford to date a girl once.

If you are planning to play BF3, then you are going to need as much vram as possible as Dice have highly optimized the engine for PC's!

Crysis 2 eats ~1.5 Gb vram due to high res texture pack and dx11 heavy on the tessalation(badly done):

That's the amount in Xfire(half it).

Even if you don't change gpu every year to high end gpus then go for the 2Gb one, trust me youll need it.

If you can stretch your budget for the 2Gb easy enough then do it!

While people would keep stressing the importance of having more ram, they keep forgetting to address basic thing like going from the GTX460 to the 6950 wouldn't be much of an upgrading, especially costing £120 extra after selling the card...

Nobody is arguing that games are not starting to need more VRAM, but the upgrading from a previous gen mid-range to current gen middle-range simple won't give much extra performance, and is quite poor return for the investment. People should be sticking with the good old upgrading every two gens approach if they already got something like GTX460 1GB/6850/6870/5850/5870 and wait for 7000 series if they can't stretching their budget to getting either a GTX570 2.5GB or GTX580 3GB right now.
