Hi,

Im thinking about putting another 580 gtx in my machine but not sure what rating power supply i need. I read that 850 will do it and then i read i need a 1000w.

My rig

i7 950 - oc 3.2
12 gig 1600 xms3
580 gtx 3 gig version
h70 water cooler
120 ssd
1tb hd
killer 2100 big foot network card

I would also like to know what sort of temp increase i would see with the sli

Some suggestions would be helpful

Many Thanks

Nick

I think, when I checked my system I was pulling 500w from the mains with prime and Furmark running together, and worked out if I added another card it pull around 730w ~.

This is worse case.

Controversial. 800W+ furmark, 700W gaming. 1000W gives you headroom, a good 850W will do the job.

Can't say about temps though, depends on the card design, if it intakes from the case or from the back, if it dumps into the case, and what sort of airflow you got in the case.

EDIT : My figures are a compilation from reviews with heavily overclocked systems. It is also the power draw at the plug.

Oh well, straight from the horses mouth. I've seen plenty using 850W for 580 SLI. If you have one already, that'll do the job. If you fancy a 1000W PSU, why not, you seem to be able to afford one :D

The SLI's will consume 620 Watts according to AnandTech while running extreme stress tests. While gaming, the cards would probably consume around 15% less. I would go with at least an 850 W PSU

You can disable the power limiter on these cards using a special version go GPU-Z which would give you 630w ~
When I had my 480 I was pulling 615w from the mains with the same test.

Temps on the topmost card will run a bit higher than the lower one, (upto 10c difference with my gtx 470's). Board spacing and case airflow will have a big impact on the card temps as well.

The HX is certified silver, bordering gold (90+), especially on 230V. I'm always wary of OCZ, if you have the budget for a 580 3GB SLI, you might as well get something with a good track record.

Even jonnyGURU was impressed with the OCZ Z-Series 850W.

The main gripe was the price but that was when it was $220. At £95 it's a steal.
