Hi All,

I have recently installed WHS 2011 on my home server. I have been trying to get lights out to work but the PC's are unable to wake the WHS but the WHS can wake the pcs. I have followed a guide for setting up WOL but it still dosen't work. Can you help me?

Motherboard: ASROCK G31M-S
CPU: E4400 @ 2GHZ
RAM 2GB 667MHZ
PCI Ethernet card: TP-Link TG-3269

Many Thanks

James

There may be a simpler answer, but…

Will WOL work if you use the on board NIC?

If it will you should be able to work around the problem by having both NICs connected and just using the on board NIC for WOL duties.

You may need to do a bit of configuration to get the normal traffic flowing through the correct NIC, but there’s no point worrying about that at the moment.

Can you post a link to the guide in order for us to see what you have tried.

Are the nics on the PCs able to send the 'magic packet' ?

Can the PCs wake each other ?

It may be as simple as enabling and connecting both NICs and then setting the 'metric' of the Gigabit NIC to a lower value than the on board 10/100 NIC. Look under the advanced options of the TCP/IPv4 settings.

I have tried the WOL On board but it still will not WOL.

The LED on the NIC is not on, when it is all plugged in. (is this correct.)

Also I could not find a bios setting on the M/B. For WOL

Also check for power saving features. On my MSI board, it had an EPU which switched off most of the ports when the machine was off disabling WoL, until I disabled the energy saving features.

1. Apparentley my motherboard does support WOL According to asrock.

2. How would i setup one NIC for WOL and one just for data? (And how would Lights out addin know which to listen for.)

3. I followed this guide http://www.sudonym.com/247/wake-on-lan-windows-7-server-2008-r2

4. I havent tried to wake the PCS up from eachother but the server wakes the PCs Up.

My understanding was that we know that the server can wake the PCs but the PCs cannot wake the server. To try and find out if it is the server config incorrectly set or the PCs we can try to get one PC to wake the other as we know the WOL function works for the receiving PCs but are not sure if the right message is being sent from them. PC waking PC would confirm that the right signal / packet is being sent to wake a machine, or not.

No lights on for the nic is a bit unusual unless, as others have stated, it has been turned off. Are the latest drivers loaded for it ?. Is it seen correctly in the device manager ? are there any unknown devices in the device manager ?. First port of call if not already done is to load the newest drivers. Sometimes the drivers shipped with the motherboards leave a little to be desired and get fairly significant updates on the manufacturers website.

There's a useful WOL site here. The monitor application is an easy way to see if the correct packets are getting through.

Quick question... what sleep state are you trying to WOL from?

The available sleep states are:-

S0 The computer is on and fully functional.
S1 The computer appears to be off with the CPU stopped. RAM is refreshed, and the computer is running in a low power mode.
S2 The computer appears to be off with the CPU stopped. RAM is refreshed, and the computer is running in a lower power mode than S1.
S3 (Standby) The computer appears to be off with no power to the CPU. RAM is in slow refresh.
S4 (Hibernate) The computer appears to be off with no power to the hardware. System memory has been saved as a temporary file on the hard disk.
S5 (Off) The computer is off with no power to the hardware, and the operating system has been shut down without saving system memory to disk.

I have looked in the bios and changed the setting for wake on PCI Devices and it still will not wake also the led is still not on. I have looked in "Network and Settings" And the onboard is not there but it is in device manager.

I have tried it in both Hibanation and Shut down and neither will WOL.
