Did you do any tests on packet loss? What type of cable?
IME normal Cat5 will suffer over 100M.

easiest solution is a 4 core fibre (2 spare) and use media convertors at each end to convert back to 100baseTX.
No point doing cat5/6 as the fibre is pretty similar in cost, your main cost is digging the trench.
Regarding the cat5 distance, i regularly order cross connects in data centres and none will install them if they are anymore than about 90m, allowing for a few metres at either end for internal patching.
