Connecting two buildings - 80m apart

I briefly worked a place that had a 100meg laser connection on the roof of 2 buildings that has line of sight. No idea of cost, and obviously fogo or heavy rain will affect performance but it's an option.

easiest solution is a 4 core fibre (2 spare) and use media convertors at each end to convert back to 100baseTX.

No point doing cat5/6 as the fibre is pretty similar in cost, your main cost is digging the trench.

Regarding the cat5 distance, i regularly order cross connects in data centres and none will install them if they are anymore than about 90m, allowing for a few metres at either end for internal patching.

Did you do any tests on packet loss? What type of cable?

IME normal Cat5 will suffer over 100M.

I did use solid cable, not cheap rubbish stuff. best guess is 120m is the longest with no packet loss etc. I did punchdown the cables etc. very carefully and I'm guessing a few metres more would ruin it completely, but it can be done.
I'm not saying you should try for more than 100m, but it can work...

have 200meter of cat6 from my mothers house to the shed at the bottom of the garden... nailed along the fence on one side.... checked it lunch time today there has been zero packets lost (transfered a good 20gb of films from one end to another) the link speed is 1gb's on all ends, max throughput was maybe 0.5mb slower than a shorter cable... but that could be down to a whole load of things....

the 80meter limit seems way off....

Good grief, that's the length of 2 football pitches.
I'd like to see a Google map of her back garden and I wouldn't like to cut the grass.

the house itself has about 4 acres of land(give or take) and about 6 horses, the "shed" is pretty much a small house, out in the middle of nowhere still with dialup :P
