Removing gaslift from office chair

Has anyone had any luck with removing a gaslift from an office chair? I ask as my current one is broke and I got a replacement gaslift but can't get the old one off

I've googled for ages and nothing has helped so far.

Some are welded in place IIRC?

one of mine was welded, the other was pressed in place, (the metal had been crimped to hold it in making it night impossible to take out)

Frame + Sledgehammer is just about your only option.
