Hi guys

abit of history about me

I am currently 20 years old and Live in Devon, I live with my sister, her bf and their newly born baby.

last year I left college, I was studying Public Services foundation degree. I quit the course after 6 months as I was finding the course really hard and it just wasn't for me. Whilst I was there I was working at McdOnlad's, and still am.

I do enjoy my job and I don't. It pays my way. Just under £1000 a month. My outgoings only add up t0 £450 a month so I have abit left over.

I do want a new job but don't have a clue what in. I don't no what I am good at or enjoy. So finding it really hard. I also want to go traveling. The good thing about my job is that they will give me the time off to go traveling for say a month as they are really flexible.

So what would you do if you were in my shoes? I no its a hard one, but any suggestions would be much appreciated

Regards

I'd go back in a time machine and not quit a job half way through.

I never get why people quit things! It looks bad on you as a person, it's much better to power on through and gain SOMETHING than lose 6 months of time and have NOTHING to show for it.

I would really go work for the Council or get some further education in you. I can't imagine there are many jobs going down that way.

I did want to join the police, but I no it just wont be for me. I aint a great speaker when it comes to speaking to me.

I hate being on tills at work

Perhaps you just need some confidence, go and join a few clubs or get a new hobby and meet new people, join a Gym.

It took me a while for me to get confident and go back to college.

college / uni just isnt for me

I passed all my GCSE's, but if wasnt for the help from my dad I wouldn't

Just about managed to pass my ALevels.

Then I started a foundation degree and it was just too hard

You were 6 months in man... should have just kept at it. Nothing is HARD, you just need to learn it better. If you don't learn, you will not progress through life very well.

I'm only 2 years older than you... and by no means had a supreme upbringing, but I still pushed forward and went where I wanted. If you keep putting yourself down all employers will do is pick-up on it and not take you on.

Visit a career advisor and get some practical advice on deciding what you want to do and what your skills and interests are.

Failing that, save up some money and travel for 6 months or a year and see how you feel when you return.

Do you have a academic interest?

Mine is computer science, I can read "The art of computer programming" by knuth, renowned for being a little dry, with corny jokes and acutally enjoy it.

Yet I can barely scrape C, in english and analysing poems is absolute torture.

What do you enjoy academically? Then do that.

Leave the guy alone about his past choices, he's asking for advice going forward not to be judged based on previous events.

Everyone is good at something, try to think about a talent you might have or something you would be happy to work at.

At 20 I get the impression it wasn't that it was hard, It's that he didn't put the time into it.

Pretty sound advice really. Personally I would suggest travelling for a bit to get it out of your head and then visit a career advisor. That way you won't regret not doing the travel thing and hopfully by the end of it you'll have some sort of idea with what you want to do.

I'd go barefoot.

Ffs, can we get off his back about dropping out of his degree? Not everyone is that strong academically, but contrary to popular belief that isn't a bad thing.

Op... Any more hands on, practical jobs you're interested in? Some kind of skilled trade - electrician or something?

Think about applying for a different course I made the mistake of chosing Computer & Electronic engineering which was whay too intensive for me If I'd've gone for either subject on it's own I'd have been ok it's just that both together was whay too much work I had **** all time to myself when I repeated the year after ****ing around during the 1st time round... but then again I didn't do this and never went back as I landed myself a nice job in IT :D

I would look at apprenticeships and/or learn a trade. There is always demand for electricians, plumbers, carpenters, etc and they can pay very well too.

I quit the Sixth Form after the first year and went to college. Best thing I ever did.
