What brand would you recommend?
I had heard that the Asus laptops suffered from overheating problems.

The ones I'm interested in are........
Acer Aspire 5750 Laptop
Asus K53E Laptop

Which one would you go for??

TIA.

I recently got the Asus X53E (seems to be exactly the same as the K53E apart from the colour) for a budget laptop I'd definitely recommend it.

Good Points:

- Cheap for the spec (I paid £400 for an i5-2410m, 4GB RAM, 500gb hdd, 2 yr warranty)

- Even after hours (5+) of intensive use, on my lap, the laptop isn't hot at all (the palm rest remains cold, the base is barely warm)

- You get 5 hours battery life with wifi + max brightness + max performance, can get 8 hours on battery saving mode.

- Doing most tasks it is reasonably quiet.

Avg Points:

- The screen colours aren't very accurate

- The keyboard has a slight flex

Overall the build quality is better than any Acer I've owned.

Acer are the worlds worst. Avoid like the plague!

I speak from vast experience.

I think Acer has gotten a lot over the years. My flat mate use to have an Acer about 5-6 yrs ago and it was terrible. I bought an Acer Timeline X last year, and it has been perfect, no problems with it at all, very solidly built.

2 years ago I bought an Asus, and the hinges broke after a year (I'm definitely take care of my stuff too). I do still think Asus makes high quality stuff though, it depends line to line for them.

The new Acers are much better than previous generations. They do represent great value for money and their extended warranty is dirt cheap if you feel the need for it. The Asus is also good. I assume you don’t want the dedicated graphics gaming models?

Laptop prices vary all the time through the resellers and Acer do tend to fluctuate especially where the outgoing models pop up frequently on special deals. I have seen the Acer i5 5750 for close to the £400 mark although it is at £450 now. If you want the dedicated graphics version it currently starts at £499 for the an i3 with a GT540m in.

However if gaming is not a priority, I would not buy either brand simply because there are other more reliable choices in the £400-£600 price bracket, principally the HP ProBooks and Lenovo ThinkPads. It really does depend whether you want to be gaming or not.
