So my computer started freezing, I restarted it now I'm getting this error message "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key".

I go into the motherboard settings and my hard drive is set as the default bootup device but I keep getting this same error and I can't do anything!

Please would someone help me!

The majority of my data is backed up but I still have things on there which are valuable for me. How do you know it's my hard drive?

I have an Asus P8P67 motherboard, which has the dodgy SATA controllers, you reckon it's the ports which are causing the problem?

I hope to god it's not my hard drive, I bought it in January ugh.

Do I literally just plug it in another SATA connector, does this involve me removing the motherboard completely and installing it again or no?

Is you motherboard the "faulty" B2 revision or the fixed B3 revision?

If it's the former then your Intel SATA 2 ports may have failed.

Unplug the SATA cable from the motherboard. If it's in one of the light blue ports then those are the Intel ports which may have failed.

Plug the cable into one of the light grey ports. These are Intel SATA 3 so will be unaffected by any failure.

Then try starting the PC.

Hi thanks for the replies,

Yes it's a faulty B2 revision board, the hard drive is connected via one of the faulty SATA ports. My computer was built for me and the guy connected the two DVD drives via the working SATA ports and the hard drive to a faulty one (this was when nobody knew about the faulty SATA ports).

The computer randomly started working yesterday but after about a hour it crashed and I got the same errors, the same thing has happened just, I managed to backup my data but I couldn't create a system image.

I'll try and connect the hard drive to a different port then, so do you think theres a good chance is to do with the SATA ports and not the actual hard drive failing?

It sounds most likely it's the Intel SATA 2 ports failing.

Hopefully moving the HDD to an Intel SATA 3 port will confirm this.

Unfortunately you'll have to RMA the board if the Intel SATA 2 ports have failed.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but you really should have swapped the board for a B3 revision when you had the chance.

Well I connected it to a grey SATA port. Booted up and get the error

"Runtime error!

Program C:\windows\system32\nvvsvc.exe

This application has requested the runtime to terminate it in an unsual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information"

What does this mean? I click ok and there is just a mouse cursor and a black screen.

Something to do with Nvidia drivers possibly being corrupted?

Perhaps using the HDD on the deteriorating ports has caused some errors.

Can you start in Safe Mode and reinstall the Nvidia drivers?
