I am currently starting to look into replacing my tv. It would seem that the models with the best 2D Picture Quality are also capable of 3D.

The only experience I have of the current 3d tech is a brief go on a Nintendo 3DS. However after a short time I was already starting to get eye strain.

So given the above would I be better off with Passive or Active 3d?

I looked at the LG passive TVs when I was buying my replacement recently. The 2D quality I found lacking, so ended up buy a Sony 46HX803, it is active 3D but to be honest I bought it based on the strength of the 2D picture and it just happens to do 3D as well. The 3D works very well and I've got a bunch of films, GT5 and so downloads and it produces a decent 3D effect.

Why would you watch 2D on the LG at all given the Cinema 3D chip converts all 2D to 3D anyway.

Most 3D TVs can convert the image from 2D to 3D, but it doesn't mean you'd want to do it all the time as the effect is usually bloody awful. The 2D picture on the LG is not as good as that on the Sony and some of the other TV available, have a look at the HUGE thread on AVforums about about the LGs and go and look at one in the shop.
