I will be buying 2 graphics cards within 2 weeks, I've already got everything else ready, will be doing a build log this weekend (but using onboard lol) I was going to get 2x 6950, as the extra Vram would be nice, but as I play games at 1080p. Vram wont matter as much? And BF3 will be running better on nvidia. I played the beta on xbox and omg...what a sham, I think BFBC2 looks better. But, its only a beta.

Anyways, budget is about £450, might be able to push that, but I could find cheap cards elsewhere if needed, not that I really want to go elsewhere.

Other specs of the system are as follow

i5 2500k (will be overclocked to say 4.6-8)
Gigabyte UD3 mobo
8GB 1600MHZ VENGENCE RAM
H100 cpu cooler
650D case
64GB M4 SSD
1TB F3 HDD

As you have already made your mind up that 'BF3 will be running better on nvidia' even though it's a 'Gaming Evolved' title then looks like you've already made your mind.

Beta using 2.4Gb of vram on 6950>70 crossfire so the 570 should be okay for BF3 although retail may increase/decrease vram usage.

I don't think the extra cash(~£70) warrants the slight performance increase if there is one, as most games will favour Amd or Nvidia so pick whats best for the games you play.

Which Gigabyte UD3 motherboard do you have?

The P67 UD3 motherboards support Crossfire only.

The Z68 UD3 motherboards support Crossfire and SLI.

Mine is the Z68 version.

I've not chose any brand yet, I've just been told the game will run better on nvidia. I will mainly play BF3, Skyrim and whatever else takes my fancy. A mate said 570 out done 2x 6950 on BF3 @ 1080p, is that true?

whats the diff between 580 1.5gb and 3gb. as theres cards about the same price but more vram :

Capability of enabling high AA under high resolution for certain vram whore games.

But why is there 1.5gb cards more expensive then the 3gb, thats whats confusing me.

Some non-reference cards can sell at a higher price, but not likely more expensive than a 3GB model. Now lots of people are selling their 1.5GB models to get the 3GB models.

my 6950 xfire laughs in the face of ram slurping games! :P

the extra ram is most useful over 1080p

From what I've read so far on the beta having less then 2Gb hasn't been shown to be a problem. Even though the game may use more then 1Gb that doesn't mean 1Gb is a bottleneck.

Drivers will improve performance over time on a game like BF3, at the moment all we have are Beta drivers for a Beta release so its far to early to draw conclusions about what's the best setup.

Truth man. Your VRAM may be being eaten up, but so what unless it's causing a real and perceptible performance bottleneck?

Ultimately, sub 2gb cards are being seen to outperform 2gb cards. Whether or not it's driver issues isn't really relevant. Clock speeds, architecture, bus etc are more important than RAM.
