Hi,

I sold an ATI 4870 1GB Graphics card on eBay a couple of days ago. Now the buyer has opened a dispute saying that the card is overheating after 5 mins of use.

The card has been working fine for years.
Any ideas on what could be the problem?

Inadequate cooling, low watt psu & damaged in transit are the 3 options I've come up with.
Thoughts on what else that could be the problem & advice would be great.

If I need to refund the buyer, I was thinking of a partial refund to minus postage costs until I can find out who's to blame.

Thanks.

Have they provided proof that the card is overheating?

Did you also take a picture of the serial number of the card before you shipped it incase they're trying to fob you off with an already faulty card they owned?

Can’t answer your question fully but when you sold the card did you write down the serial number etc?

As seen it happen quite a few times, person buys pc component then asks for refund a few days later stating that it don’t work or whatever reason and sends you his broken pc component back instead

/edit ^ just seen Jasons post

I've always known paypal to side with the seller so they dont lose commision, should be fine if you protest your case.

No, it's usually the other way round - PayPal usually side with the buyer.

OP - did you take pics and get the serial number (as previously asked by others)?

Check their feedback first, also as mentioned above, did you take note of the serial number? I'd get them to provide proof of the overheating and a photo of the card showing the serial number. Seen too many cases of cons on ebay, having been on the receiving end of a few where people just try to pull a fast one.

From every scam / bad sale case I've seen they side with the buyer. Maybe second hand bike parts arent rated as high as pc components in PayPals eyes.

Thanks for all the responses.

I didn't note down the serial number, but my card is missing half the powercolor branding sticker, so would be hard to fob me off with another.

Here is an image of what I mean: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/856/img4617o.jpg/

I'm waiting for the buyer to respond to my questions.
One of which asks the computer's model number/specs so I can see what the card is being put into.

I will ask for proof that the card is overheating.

Should I ask if the cards fan is spinning as it is a remote possibility that it got damaged (somehow) during transit - or would that be giving the buyer ideas.

Thanks again.

I would wait with asking that question to be honest, see what they say about their pc specs and proof of overheating first.

Your shafted.

ask them to return the card when they do so return there money.

otherwise paypal will side with the buyer and will return there money anyway and at that point you dont even have the card.

Just got an email:

Right, control centre i knew nothing about but within 5 - 10 minutes of graphics card being place into my computer, it started reaching 90c on idle mode nothing running not even basic programs such as I’m - Explorer.

As compared to what I have seen its idle temp should not even hit 70 - 80c in idle mode. So i shall check the fan speeds once I'm back from college later Friday afternoon. And will give you feedback as to what happens.

The spec I’m running on is as follows:

Intel Quad core 2.5 GHZ 2mb Cache.
3GB DDR2 Ram (States the obvious)
480GB HDD
Cool Master Server Tower.
850w PSU
3 x 120m Fans.
Windows 7 x64bit.

I'm currently studying IT and have built Pc's before. I’ve came across no issues before when setting something up such as this. As for Drivers the Disc you gave seemed to only have Vista Drivers so i went and found XP ones which came back *Unworking*

I take it all those pictures are of your card, if so, you've got proof of your serial number there.

Also

However, he's previously stated
Windows 7 x64bit.

Bit odd.

Did you state you'd accept returns in the auction? Could just state that the item was sold as seen and you don't accept returns.

He's studying IT, but couldn't work out how to navigate to ati.com and download the latest drivers for Windows 7?

FFS.
