Canon Wide Angle Lens

I've hired out the 10-22 and fell in love with it. Currently aiming to buy one new in the next month or two as an early christmas present for myself :D

I just posted a shot in the show us your photography thread that I took with it.

That's a very nice picture.

It's a very similar style of photography which I like doing, as the reason behind this post.

I am going to have a busy day tomorrow. :D

Bare in mind that's a HDR, no idea how I got 3 photos without people in at 5 around london bridge...

I can't speak for the other lenses people have mentioned, but from the things I've read the 10-22 by canon produces some of the best images available for that lens class. Only thing I'm worried about is dropping the £600 (I think) for the lens and changing body down the line...

You have a 7D though so... FU :p.

The Tokina is very prone to CA though wide open, it's one reason I put it aside when picking a UWA for my 1.6x. I reviewed many samples on FlickR and PBase. It is however built like a tank.

I had the Sigma 8-16mm and while it's very compact it was also very slow and images tended to come out slightly darker compared to the Canon 10-22 at the same exposure settings which replaced it a week later.

Since Op is going FF down the line then the 10-22 might be out the question but it's not exactly going to lose its value and when Op does upgrade body he can very easily sell the 10-22.

10-22 is sharp wide open at all focal lengths and throughout the entire frame and the optical quality justifies the absolutely massive price it commands. It also has pleasing bokeh even at the 10mm end which again reminds you of a wide L lens.

I was waiting for you comment. :D

The only thing I find a bit annoying is the 10-22 doesn't come with a lens hood because it isn't a L series lens.

I am going for a good test tomorrow.

seems ridiculous, your saying you want a uwe and your going ff when the 5D is released.. Well that to me just says buy for full frame. You'll have to sell the EFs 10 - 22 to get the 17-40 and theres not much price difference between them so your only going to be loosing money. Maybe £100 that could go toward that 5D III.

Ive had both lenses in question... infact all 3 as we have the 16-35II at work an I don't like it. CA and no where near as sharp as the 17-40 below F8.
10-22 is fantastic, 17-40 is amazing. 16-35 just looses it at the wide-open area but also costs double.

But the 17-40 is just pointless on a crop sensor. Just use the kit lens for landscapes TBH.
17mm is not that wide on a crop sensor.

Yeah I bought the hood with the lens with extreme teeth gritting hesitation but I just had to get over the ridiculous price Canon put on hoods soon enough :/ It seem so silly, all of the competition provide a free lens hood with virtually all lenses..... Y U NO PROVIDE LENS HOOD FREE CANON??

This is indeed a joke. £600 for a lens and they don't even give you a dam cover for it! I thought that was a bit shabby to be frank, I might write and complain when I buy mine and try get a free one from canon :D.

If you buy a canon 10-22mm second hand you will not loose £100 or anything like the second hand value is rock solid and they sell easily.

I know the OP is saying he's going to go full frame but so are half the people I know with a DSLR and very very few of them actually do. The number of people waiting fro the 5D MKiii is getting silly and I suspect there will be a lot of disapointment when it arrives and isn't what they expect.

Personally I's much rather have a lens for now and let the full fram thing sort itself out as and when.

Canon's insistence on not including hoods is ridiculous but easily solved with a cheap fake from the bay.

Agreed on the prices of the 10-22.

I bought mine new, 3+ years ago before all the prices rocketed (£380 I believe) and I can still sell it for more than that!

At most you will loose £50 on it, and you are loosing more than that on your 7D body anyway.

I'm also going to go full frame at some point, but for the moment my 10-22 is doing it's duty!

Just been to Jessops and they only had the 10-22 in stock, so I am heading into town.

I want to give them all a test and see how they all perform.

Well whether you think its pointless waiting for the 5D3 isnt relevant here. I agree with you its silly to say im going to get it etc etc etc. If you want just full frame there's nothing wrong with the bargain that is the current 5D.
However I engineered my reply to suit his requirements and he said he would go FF very soon so who am I to ignore that.

Ok you might not loose £100 on the 10-22 but then again you might. I didn't say it as an absolute. But even so that £50 lost could be towards a decent polariser (a thin one) if your using a 10-22 at 10mm on 1.6x you'll require a pro grade thin C Pola. My jessops one was visible at up to 12mm. So really there are more things to look into than a quick purchase that you'll change.

Anyway that's my input and I think there's a good number of folk here who will agree with what I have said. Up to the OP at the end of the day.
