This is becoming too common an occurrence on our streets these days, even where I live in the affluent rural area of South Wiltshire we have seen an increase in stabbings and violence.
Is it time we took a leaf out of the book of the NY mayors office and increased the Police presence and a zero tolerance policy to crime.
Under Rudy Guiliani, New York clamped down on small crimes such as drinking on the streets, petty crime, anti social behaviour and so on. They targeted the dealers and no go areas with increased Police patrols and visible law enforcement as well as mapping crime geographically and targeting those areas.
I understand this costs money, but surely it is money well spent. If we need more police, hire them. If we need more prisons, build them and if we tackle this now, then maybe, just maybe we can do as New York has done and gentrified large former no go areas such as Williamsburg in Brooklyn.
Partnered with Urban renewal and better public relations and education, targeting the triggers for violent crime and allocating resources better surely we as a society can, if not stop, at least reduce this kind of thing happening every day.

A teenager holding her 11-month-old son was injured when she came under fire from a shotgun as she chatted to two friends in west London.
Jessica Chrichlow, 18, was taken to hospital with the two others, aged 17 and 19, after the attack in John Fearon Walk, near Queen's Park, on Thursday.
Det Ch Insp Mick Foote said the baby was unhurt but the teenagers were struck by shotgun pellets.
The gunman joined three other men and all four fled on bicycles, he said.
No arrests have been made over the attack.
