Well I somehow don't think my old 4890 will cut the mustard with this and tbh I see a lot of posts about 'issues' with CF/SLI and the obvious heat problems so I am looking for the best single card for performance in BF3, money is not an issue (umm almost), reading a few threads the best option so far sounds like the 6990 but I would welcome any improvements if possible..

The 6990 is the fastest card available at present but you will be dependant on crossfire for it as it has 2 gpu cores on 1 card and it can get hot and noisy under load. Ignoring the Gtx 590 next in line is the GTX580, single gpu card so no dependancy on multi gpu technology.

Wait for the new amd cards before deciding?

I want to play the game in a month so can't really wait and I don't think the 4890 will allow me to play it without it looking more like BF2!. My sig is wrong sorry as its not crossfire anymore - I sold the other card as it was a pain to get some games to run in CF and too much heat.

Sounds like the 580 might be a better option then and looking at reviews it runs cooler/quieter than the 6990.

Bah screw that I am not abandoing my stance and there are too many issues with crossfire/sli I'm getting a 580 lol
The 6950 xfire will destroy a 580.

I thought the same as you about dual card setups having 8800gt sli and swore I wouldn't touch it again!

Fast forward to current Gen and I gave it another shot, so glad I did!

Both Amd and Nvidia have made vast improvements in stability and scaling, it's so much better.

If you want the absolute best single gpu then it's got to be the 580, if you tend to keep your card for a few years then make sure you get the 3gb one.
