Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-ray

this is awesome news. I wasnt sure this was ever going to happen due to the difficulties with the special affects and how it was filmed originally.

will be buying all seasons without a doubt

I can only assume they are redoing every single special effect from scratch. From what I can gather, the series was filmed on 35mm film and then all the FX were done on analogue video tape.

Must mean all the LCARS displays need redoing too as Michael Okuda put some very daft things in the text as he knew no-one could make it out on standard def TV.

*mumbles that he'd rather have Deep Space Nine in BluRay with redone effects instead*

Yes, from what i have just read, the special affects are all being redone as you just can't upconvert the orginal affects.

I really can't wait for this as its my fav program ever, along with B5!

and 7.1 sound as well!

I used to have every episode on VHS, proper bought tapes not recorded off TV, so spent a fortune on this program already. For BluRay I'd like to get only certain episodes but I doubt they'll be released like that.

Is this the same thing as they did with Star Trek: The Original Series then? Did they have to re-do all the FX for that, too? I've never seen it. Did it turn out good?

Yeah i had the last 4 seasons all bought on VHS as i think the BBC orignally only showed the first 3 seasons all in 1 go and then stopped. I think the VHS tapes came out 2 episodes per tape and these were released before they were shown on tv from season 4 onwards. Jeez thats about 20 years ago now!

I have all seven seasons on DVD but the quality on a HD tv is certainly lacking and converting to HD is going to be fantastic. I hope!

Maybe you guys will know the answer to this. 25 years ago when Next Gen was being made, how did they make the split-screen shots, i.e. when Brent Spiner was playing both Data and Lore together in the same shot. How was that made? Was it done on the actual negative or later in post production? I have no clue about such things. :p

I almost posted this a couple of days ago. Very interesting that they have to re-do all the effects, must take a horrendous amount of time to do properly, but I'm looking forward to it. You can tell the DVDs weren't produced from the original film as they look quite dated like the VHS does now.

The only thing I see is that combined, all the seasons of this will probably cost a small fortune. I can't see Blu-Ray being replaced all that quickly though (what with the slow start due to the economic conditions and subsequent slow recovery), so it might be worth investing on this format. If not now, when? That is, I guess, what you must ask yourself.

Does anyone here have TOS on Blu-Ray? Is it the same deal, from film and effects remastered? I caught it on TV the other day, seemed the effects had been re-done, not sure how old that was though, may have been done several times since 1966 ish! What about the movies? Were they also remastered and done properly, I see they're out on Blu-Ray already.

This is just the start (hopefully). We've still got DS9, VOY and ENT to go. DS9 will probably be the best to get as a set as it has a decent story arc, but I really wouldn't mind a bit of ENT, it's certainly grown on me over the years!

I think there must be another movie coming soon too, good times for HD trek fans!

On a practical note how large will screens have to get for people to actually notice the quality of anything better than blu ray. I'm only guessing but Blu Ray might be here a while.
