My offer on Sky HD ended (was £25 a month for everything, then recently £35) and the best they can do now is £50 a month, to which I said fine, I'll cancel, hoping they'd give me more discount, but they called my bluff and cancelled WEF 03/11.

Anyway, I am thinking of calling up again to undo that as it's still cheaper than moving to TiVo and I am put off by the reports of the box being quit buggy.

Any feedback please? Also has there been a recent firmware release on it and if so, has it helped?

What is the IQ like in comparison to Sky HD?

Had my Tivo box since release of the 500GB version. Yes, it can abit slow at times compared to Sky HD but it has so many features it over shadows Sky.

I've fallen in love with my TiVO - It really gets smarter the more you use it.
For example, I recorded one episode of a show I like, now in the suggestions section you're likely to see about five other episodes that it has recorded - Old suggestions get overwritten with new suggestions, and the suggestions become more smart the more you like/dislike episodes :)

And the search is really really useful. (And it'll be more useful in the next couple of months, as a new update will allow you to search using the number pad instead of selecting the letters :)

Two good reports then, so far, so good.

I already have 50Mb and my home phone with Virgin, so it makes sense to have the TV with them as well, but I was weary with it being a new service.

The activation fee is free (well, under an offer) now for the 500GB model; is it worth spending £50 on the 1TB?

I know you are worried about it being buggy and all but have you never had your sky box sitting there with just a standby light and no way to turn it on for 10 minutes. Or it will lose almost all channels and leave you with the first few channels?

I know I certainly have :(

My greatest ever gadget regret was not buying a Tivo (original) when it first came out. I finally bought one when they were clearing the shelves and it served me very well until the service got turned off this year. The whole user experience was so much better that Sky+ and then Sky+HD. Shame it never had dual sat receivers so the picture quality suffered a bit and you could record and watch 2 channels at the same time. Even though I live in a reasonably sized town Virgin will never come and cable us up so I'll have to live on memories ;)

Hated my TiVO. Had it 2 weeks and then decided to go backto sky, that was 6 weeks ago. Virgin bloke is coming today to pick it up. Went back to Sky HD as a new customer (you have to wait 30 days).

Sky is so much more polished. Everything on the TiVO is long winded. Has a tendency to freeze, it has no auto-off function, its slow as well. The new Sky HD box is so fast as well, its like having an SSD in windows.

That's so disappointing to hear. My Series 1's UI was at least as quick as the Sky HD box, remembers season passes which Sky still can't do right, better at searching and the feature of auto rewinding when you stopped fast forwarding through adverts was a feature to die for.

No, my Sky HD box has been rock solid since the day it was installed.

Did Sky manage to give you any decent deals when you went back? They quoted me just over £50 a month for everything (sports, movies, HD etc), TiVo works out about the same but I thought I'd give it a go, plus having everything in the same bill is easier.

Just a random thought, will I be able to watch the F1 next year with TiVo? I will be getting the Sky pack but my understanding is that I'll be down some channels?

F1 will be on SKY Sports, of which Virgin carries all 4 of them. It's rumoured to be on a mix of SS1&SS2.

I have no wish for the movies or sports. But got a brand new box free and all the srtandard channels for half price for 6 months.

I'm a bit stuck as to what to do.

I was paying £42.50 for my BB and phone with Virgin, and just over £35 to Sky.

Now Sky want just over £50 for the same channels, and will not budge on price. Currently, I'm due to be D/C with Sky next month.

Virgin want £102 a month (including BB and phone obviously) for the same channels, plus free installation for the 500GB TiVo box.

Even though I have a D/C pending with Sky, I reckon they'd cancel the request if I called.

Never realised just how much I spend a month on TV. :(

I hate the amount of money TV costs, but you seem to be spending quite a bit more. What kinda package do you have?

That seems steep. I pay around this much for Virgins VIP50 package; thats the phone line, 50mb BB, Tivo, second V+HD box, all the channels (inc Movies and Sports), and their HD option.

Are you sure they are only quoting you for a comparable TV service?

Yeah I just noticed the VIP package on their website. Another call tomorrow then, thank god the call is free.

I don't understand why they just don't give me the best offer anyway instead of messing me around.

Speak with the retention dept and explain you're cutting back on services and want to stick with either sky or virgin.

I did this and got: TiVo (love it), sky sports hd, tv xl, M phone, multiroom & 50mb broadband for £77pm.

As for TiVo v sky hd. TiVo blows sky's socks off. My box is much faster & has a load more apps and features. Plus recording 3 channels at once has helped big time

You won't regret it
