For a while today, I actually had 4 cars at the same time, a new record for me. Alas the Golf has now been sold (for a modest profit) and I'm left with the diesel C6 A6, the Madgwick kit car and my new baby.
It's awesome! Quick spec list...
2003 RS6 Avant
4.2 V8 Twin Turbo, 5 speed Auto with tiptronic paddle shift
450BHP, 0-60 in 4.5
Huge Brembo brakes
19" Wheels
Bose sound, TV, Nav and phone (anyone got a Nokia 6310?
)
Plush leather, electric Recaro seats
Alcantara headlining (much more awesome in the flesh)
The performance is incredible. At 100MPH it's just getting started. What's more amazing is how effortless it is. Part throttle takes you around most traffic like it's standing still. You can go full throttle mid corner and just let the traction control sort everything out. The only problem is that I've got 3 months, at best, before I get banned from driving. The temptation is simply too great.
Handling? Controlled, composed but very numb. Mild understeer when pushed and no steering feedback whatsoever. It is firm but comfortable and rides very well. The way it handles changes in road surface, dips and potholes at speed is very impressive.
Running costs are eye watering. I'm fully aware as my business partner also has an RS6 as his 'toy' car. It's just had the cambelt done and the brakes overhauled and the tyres, whilst an 'interesting' brand, are all nearly new. All I have to worry about are the turbos, the gearbox, the suspension and the electronics
.
I'm currently managing 18mpg but I've seen 22mpg from Seb's on a run at 80mph. £110 of Super leaves me with 260 miles of range showing on the trip computer.
Insurance? £1300, age 25, 0 NCB (on my other policy). It could be worse.
