Swapping tyres front to back

Arguably making sure it has good tyres all round should be a higher priority than servicing it to schedule.

While not servicing it on time may generate questions come resale time and therefore impact you financially in the future, having decent tyres fitted helps contribute to your safety now.

If you can't afford £180 to put tyres on your car it sounds to me like you've massively over-committed on the cost your living arrangements compared to your income.

I've steared clear of this thread because I knew I would be tempted to respond to someone who thinks they are chancillor of the exOCUK but I've just done an ego search, noticed the thread was 3 pages long, couldnt resist and on the first page there is gold.

I think I'm going to let them run to as close to the legal limit as I can, what do you think about that mr financial advisor with access to my bank account, think of all the innocent people that will die, for the love of god think of the children!

The thread was looking for temporary solution to tide me over for a while as i've already mentioned and has already been discussed by helpful people but typical OCUK Motors Police Financial Division obviously need a bigger budget next year and therefore make more pointless posts

The tyres are perfectly legal but because they have somewhere around 2.5mm of tread I now cant afford to buy a house and run my car!?

I love this forum I really do its awesome, some of the people on here are absolutely mind blowing with the crap they come out with!

Its pretty much the same as any car forum, petrolheads post everyday, a normal joe comes in to ask a sensible question and by the time he is finished with he feels like jack the ripper and paedo bear all rolled into one.

Good luck with your tyres mate :)

The thing is though, he (PeterNem) has a point. We're not being smarmy, it's just a case of you looking after your own skin! 2.5mm of tread isn't a lot at all. There's a review here of how stopping distances vary with tread depth:

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/buying/buying/200855/how_to_keep_your_tyres_safe.html

You're best off keeping your tyres at 3mm or more if you can. It's up to you of course, but we're just recommending what is safe and best practice. I wouldn't drive on tyres with 2.5mm or less, I'd change them. They wouldn't inspire me with confidence especially on fast roads in the wet. You can notice a difference in stopping power between 3mm and a newish tyre. There's always that time where you need stop quickly for whatever reason, and I don't know about you but when I press the brake pedal I like it to do what I ask promptly!

Never ever have better tyres at the front compared to the rear, even on a FWD car.

I remember a video with Vicky Henderson whats her face girl lady, the difference was remarkable, and this was on a FWD car.

I think the legal limit is an arbitrary number conceived to prevent idiots from running about with bald tyres. I'd change them sooner if I were you ;)

Na, am gunna do burnoutz init bruv, getum bald lyk dem slikz n go rag it ;)

Herp Derp reappears on OCUK after taking a break with disapointment in the realisation that he will never be a mod

I got bored with this thread so apoligies if this has already been mentioned.

Put the tyres with most tread on the rear, and get some new ones asap. :)

The rear end having less tread than front is never a great idea in FWD. Leaves them very suseptible to the rear aquaplaning.

Ah, I should have avoided this thread.

OP - Why did you even post here if you knew the outcome? Yahoo Answers would have been a better place, the question would have fitted in with the usual dross that gets posted there also.

I don't understand why people buy sporty cars if they don't have the means or the desire to run them properly, I really don't. Perhaps you've more important things to do with your cash than spend it on car running costs - if thats the case then cool, but pick a car that suits this mindsight rather than shoestringing a hot hatch.

If things are tight - which they are for lots of people at the moment - then why burden yourself with a hot hatch? Just have a cheap runabout where decent tyres are 35 quid a corner and save your cash for the other stuff in your life that matters to you more.

Shock horror as forums user Relentlesslybadposter96 is not only bad at posting, but bad at making decisions in life as well.

There tends to be a correlation in posting ability and real life intelligence. It should actually come as no surprise that someone who is stupid when it comes to posting decisions, such as posting a thread and getting upset when he gets answers from the people he asked, is also stupid when it comes to life choices

Personally in your position I'd put some part worns on and inspect them carefully for bulges or other damage when they have air in but before they go on the car. I know not everyone on here is a fan though.

They had 2.6mm just 2k miles ago

That's not a good thing, 1.6mm is not the limit of safety its the limit of being so unsafe that it becomes an offence to use them on the road, below 3mm a tyres effectiveness drops logarithmically (may be exponentially, I always mix those two up).

If you really are that skint, buy some of the cheapest, nastiest tyres on the market to keep you legal and drive sensibly perhaps.

If you cannot afford to maintain the thing legally then park it up and forget about it until you can.

They were 2.6mm 2k miles ago and now they are around 2.5mm? so they have only lost 0.1mm in 2000 miles??!?! seems very unlikely.

I would imagine that 2.6mm 2000 miles ago on the front of a FWD car would mean they would be very close to legal limit now, if not on or under it. Have you check them in the last few days to make sure they have legal tread so that rotating them would still be possible.

The other idea is to buy one tyre and fit the spare which has never been used and just use one of the old tyres tyres as a spare for now

Any helpful comments?

as long as it's the same kind of tyre, this could be a cheap option to keep you going. I know 2.6 is legal, but we're getting to the pants end of the year now so replace as soon as possible.

both my fronts are at the markers now, getting them replaced tomorrow which is going to hurt a little.

Just put a pair of part worns on the focus for £68 - Dunlop sport fast response - 195/60/15.

Done and done.
