Long story short a guy i know is looking to plonk a gtx570 into his sytem which consists of a 3 ghz core 2 duo, gtx260 and 4 gigs of ram. Ive already explained that the core 2 will be a bottleneck on the card but he just wants to upgrade graphics now to make BF3 more playable untill he can afford to upgrade the mobo and cpu etc.

How much of a bottleneck is he looking at, i rememebr switching from a 3.5 ghz q6600 to my current cpu and even unclocked there was a pretty hefty fps difference between the two. His res is 1680x1050, id imagine even with the core 2 it would make a pretty sizable jump over the gtx260 framerate, more so if he can get the cpu clocked up some.

If he is playing BF or other game optimised for quad I would expect a bigger increase from going quad (even Q6600) than upgrading to a 570. My bro had the same specs as ur friend (C2D @ 3.1GHz) and when i gave him my Q6600 his fps in BC2 doubled with the same GTX 260.

Ive mentioned a quad to him but atm he just wants a graphcs bump more so than anything. =/ Ive just no real idea of how much of a boost he would get using a 570 with that cpu in bf3.

Actually looking at this vid it seems to run pretty decently, this is on a dual core at 3.5 and a gtx560

This is because the video shown in the footage is on a subway (indoor) map without much depth. Pretty sure on an open map with lots of things going on close and afar the dual-core will fail to cope and drop the GPU usage way down together with the frame rate due to the CPU bottleneck.

Ive seen another outdoors on the same map and its running pretty well, even recording fraps at the same time. The bigger maps like caspian will cause issues as you say.

A gpu upgrade is more glamourous and u feel like ur really getting something for ur money (i guess cos it's big and u can see it in the PC and historically it was the best way to get a boost in gaming performance) but he needs to step past this pshycological factor/history and go quad, that will unlock his fps and he'll realise he was even holding back his 260! There isnt much point running on Ultra at 10 fps.

He's only really wanting high settings at that res, if its not a gpu upgrade he'll probably just buy it on 360. He's one of these people that seems to think a gpu upgrade will be the be all end all despite the fact that the cpu is what, 4 years old now?

Well, ended up hes going with a 2500k, p67 and 8 gigs of ram for now, then getting a 570 nearer christmas :)

WOW how did u do that! Was expecting he'd find a second hand Q6600 or Q9450  nice work G :D

He was probably thinking about it himself, initally he was going for a non k cpu and a h67 then i told him the p67 mobo can clock the cpu and that swayed him over to the k series. He probably wont bother clocking it but he always has the option. :)
