Hi guys,

I have a very poorly Panasonic Plasma - TH42PX80B, I've sent it away for repair as all three HDMI sockets and now the component connections have died - Scart being the last surviving member.

The TV repair company say that the board has "gone" and needs replacing...

They've quoted me something like £180 for the board.

How many boards do this TV have? Is it something I can get hold of myself and install? Surely I'm likely to find it a bit cheaper than 180 ?

I fix PCs for a living so am used to motherboard etc. in that sense.

Thanks for any advice.

If it's not worth doing / can't be done I'll be in the market for a new TV.

depends what board and whats went on the board tbh.

if you know what board you need and can get one cheap enough then its an easy job.

father in law repairs plasmas and lcds for a living so if you need any advice etc email in trust :)

that's the thing I don't know which board it'll be and likely if I ask the TV repair company they wouldn't tell me, probably just be like blablala and try and baffle me with bs.

I'll ask em anyway when they drop the TV off tomorrow or friday...

The HDMI's and the Component connections sit on the main board. Thats the only board that you'll need to swap out. It *may* need to be reprogrammed though before you install it. I don't believe they come with firmware software. This will be tricky for you if you don't have the software or the cable to do it. I may be wrong though and it may come pre flashed. Also be extra carefull with the exposed power supply, YSUS and XSUS boards and with the ribbon cables.

lot of the panny stuff you can download the firmware and load it from usb.

(according to my father in law whos on the other end of the phone )

agrees with above most likely suspect is the main board and $180 is a good price to supply and replace

Thanks for the help on this so far guys,

Sorry, got a cold at the moment so I'm not making much sense ...

The quote was £180 for the board alone, and £60 for the repair, so well over £200... (I'd rather throw another 300 odd to it for a brand new TV etc.) hence me seeking to repair it myself.

The other thing is yes, I remember now that the TV repair guy said yesterday it is the mainboard that's gone.

I've just found a replacement on the bay for £50. I suppose I should ask the seller if the board comes pre- flashed? Is that the right thing to ask?

When did you get this TV?

Panasonic on more than one ocassion were doing 5 year warranties

less than 5 years ago, but the company I bought it from went into admin, and then another company bought them out and kept the same name, annoying to say the least.

not the end of the world if it isnt flashed, you should be able to get the firmware off a panasonic site somewhere. :)

father in law says its very simple to replace the board (if you come from a pc background) nothing there that would give you any worries or problems :)

How would I get the firmware onto it ? I actually looked for the firmware for this model TV quite a few months ago (as the HDMI went well before the component did) and I was content for a few months just using the component and scart connections.

I had a look on Panasonic's website for the firmware and endlessly googled for it to no avail :(

i cannot find firmware for my tv and its from the same era as is, pz85b

does he use any specific websites?

also i take it he means SD card?

It's a pretty old set so you'll probably have an engineer port on the back of the TV for updating software. I believe the older sets didn't allow end users to update the firmware.

Had a reply to the question I asked (will the board need reprogramming / does it come with firmware software ) and got this answer:

no set up needed removed from a tv with faulty screen.
thanks

So I guess all I need to do is get my TV back and go and get this board...

Thanks for all of your input, in the end I managed to procure a board for £24.99 and spent an hour this morning installing it. Very easy job, chuffed with myself for not having spent £260 odd on getting someone else to do it.

Feels great having our TV back on the wall. :)

Thanks all!
