2012 Porsche Boxster S

The Porsche Boxster, the poor mans/gay man/mid life crisis man's Porsche. More of this "every panel is new" crap. Can't Porsche start making good looking cars again?

What in the same way a 370Z is a poor man's GT-R?

Get a grip.

I suspect this post by Jay was to illicit a response but:

To be fair, and putting the car enthusiast owners aside, the Boxster does scream mid-life crisis and round here, I mostly see them driven by people who fit this stereotype bang on. If you are an average man in his 40s and 50s looking for a decent roof down sportscar with the right badge then the Boxster is the logical choice. The 911 came first and in reality wasn’t/isn’t really that affordable by this demographic, the Boxster however ticks all the boxes. Does this make it a poor man’s 911 or simply a Porsche for the poorer man?

The 350Z/370Z isn’t exactly on the to do list of the MLC lot.

Obviously. I mean for the price of a new 370Z you could get a CAT D GTR!

Jay, if a 50k starting price car is for poor men, what do you happen to drive? And learning in your mums corsa doesn't count.....

*edit* im not middle aged and don't have a boxster....

please get over this silly assumption that because there's a better, more expensive model in the company's range that the lesser models are devalued.

The Boxster is one of the best cars in its class - shock horror its not as good as a car at least twice its price.

A poor mans GTR is not the 370Z. What I meant was, if your in the market for a Porsche, save up a little more and get a 4S or 911 Turbo, don't get the bottom of the rung entry level version. I'd rather have a 944 or a BMW M Coupe than a Boxster.

Not devalued?! of course they are devalued, a 1.1 will always been seen as the ****** cheap version compared to a GTi, just like the "entry level" Porsche will always be seen as the bargin/home brand cereal or In my words the "Netto" version

But that is personal preference and totally different types of cars :confused: The Boxster is a best in class drop-top sportscar bought by people who want a best in class drop-top sportscar.

aren't you the same bloke who was spouting exactly the same stuff a week or so ago?

Why not just make it a signature then you won't have to repeat yourself?

How are you now on about cars which offer 1.1 engine variants i.e superminis from a topic on a premium sports car.

And you will find that the GTi variants are seen as the top spec 1.1s not the other way round.

Do you pine at the loss of Max Power magazine btw?

Do you consider a Mustang an 'entry level' Ford, because it's not the GT?

I must be having my mid life crisis at 21 then.

Every person who has seen my car or been in it has said how much they would love to have one but can't simply because they can't afford it. By the time people can usually afford a Porsche along with everything else in life they are 30/40/50.

It's hands down the best car in it's class, a class that is expensive to buy into and even more expensive to run so of course it's a car not goint to be driven by 18-23 year olds.

The Boxster is one of the best if not best handling cars in its class, am sure there are plenty of petrol heads who actually buy the Boxster for its go-kart mid-engine handling charisma and not due to some mid-life crysis.

Do you have the same view of say the Cayman, it essentially cost the same, has same under-pinnings and same power plants, the only difference is the shell, is this too a mid-life crysis car?

Max Power? lol never read it.

Surely thats down to personal preference too? personally I'd rather have a best in class drop-top BMW or Merc

Yes thats me

They might not have called it a GT but the Mustang was a GT-equivalent

No I personally love the Caymen, but I'd definitely have the S model.

Anybody else want to take a shot at me? I mean I forgot this is a forum, but isn't the point of a forum to voice your opinion and argue your case against others?

Are you rich lol?

How can a 21 year old afford a Boxter S?

Run your own business?

You even quoted me and you will notice in the first sentence I put "To be fair, and putting the car enthusiast owners aside"

If you know about cars, then the Boxster makes perfect sense. A lot of people, and you have to put aside personal bias and OcUK motors forum bias as people on here are enthusiasts, don’t really know that much about cars and just buy the latest fashion or fad or what Top Gear magazine recommends. An average bloke in his 40s can turn up at a Porsche dealer and PCP a new one of these and easily live with it for 2-3 years and it won’t financially cripple him.

I have never said the Boxster isn’t all of that and in fact I believe I have pointed out it is best in class.

I don't actually think the Boxster is a poor man’s 911 and I have only ever used those specific terms in jest in the past. What it is though, is a Porsche for the poorer man or perhaps better phrased as the less well off, much the same as the Cayman.

Most people can’t just go out and buy a 911, either new or used without lots or research and / or lots of money or it will bite them. The Boxster and Cayman are more affordable and sit within a broader demographic.

My family are not in anyway rich, my mum earns less than £16k a year and my dad doesn't earn anything as he's not with us anymore. I dropped out of my University degree without a qualification and messed around at school and managed 5A-C's and a couple of B's at college.

I just work hard.

The Cayman is the same car with a roof. Also the none S Cayman is still a very quick car indeed and weighs even less. The S gives you more power, PASM and some other features and I'd buy an S too, but the regular Cayman is still has the same capabilities come the twisties.

The Boxster S shares the same underpinnings, well at least to my knowledge, certainly the Spyder does as it competes with the Cayman R in test and even beats it in some marginally.

Cayman customers are no doubt more likely to be petrol heads and your gonna find them been driven hard and as they should.

Boxster customers are gonna be a higher percentage of posers, mid-life crysis or just want a Porsche, but the Boxster itself is an amazing car, it offers Cayman handling and performance which is not far off 911 performance whilst having the option to have the top down. Its a great car and the 911 is not for everyone due to both price and the way it drives (rear engine is not for some).

Yeah but don't forget the GT-R is a poor man's LFA.....which is a poor man's Enzo.....which is a man's Veyron....which is a poor man's speed boat....which is a poor man's helicopter.....which is a poor man's plane....which is a poor man's yacht...which is a poor man's private island....which is a poor man's country.....which is a poor man's continent....which is a poor man's planet..... (think I've taken it far enough :p)

Looks mint - Possibly even better looking than the 911!

Initial impressions aside - I can see the MRS comparison and that's not a good thing. I think the rear re-design is great - it gives the car a bit more 'direction' and loses the 'can't tell if it's coming or going' problem with the boxter.

Porsche's design department must have a really easy life lol.

I have a friend that works in the Porsche design dept over in Germany and I can confirm he does have an easy life - It can't be hard driving around in a 911 (Any non-GT) company car and popping out not-so-new designs once every so often!
