Honda plans new Civic Type R

I don't see why Honda would need to go FI. Firstly it's against the Type R tradition and secondly it's downright lazy. They'll only do it if they start fretting about CO2's.

The fretting is more to do with CO and NOx emissions as shown by the K20a in the FN2 not meeting EU5. That said a new platform may offer the options to clean the emissions up that were probably too expensive to implement on an out going model.

We shall wait and see though, there has been talk of the hot CRZs with a 1.6 engine in development 1.6 turbo in 160bhp and 200bhp variants.

I woulda been more excited if the Integra wasnt a bike addition and was coming instead of a Civic.

Still will be a great car no doubt

People really must realise that the maximum bhp that an engine gives is a very poor representation of how the car drives as this does not take into account weight, gearing or the power curve.

To release a 2.0 NA 9000rpm engine that has 250hp could be crap for day-to-day use if it has no power in the 1000-5000rpm range.

Its VTEC so it hasn't got that issue... even though its a commonly slated one. Its still NA though and that can be a problem for customer expectation when comparing to a 250bhp turbo. The high rev ceiling helps with gearing for the acceleration comparison in each gear though.

Unless Honda start doing ally bodys and pulling weight out there will still be a significant deviation between an NA product and the 2012 onwards hot hatch competitors

New details

turbo - - lost its niche
210 hp - - lacking compared to its competitors
0-62 ~6.5secs & top speed ~ 150mph - - no quicker than an ep3 (2 generations old)
five door only  - a vast majority of hot hatch owners rarely use the rear seats.
stupid rear wing  - looks chav and gets in the way

Overall it looks like a disappointment to me. I was expecting Honda to have ago to reclaim the title of best hot hatch again, but I can't see that being the case with these stats.

I realise VTEC is good. It is a simple yet effective design to give good power at high rpm. However the days of hot-hatch high rpm cars are dying :(.
They will still exist in high end cars though I am sure.

High revs drinks fuel and gives high CO2. I don't agree with the high fuel taxing in the UK (and this is from someone who does a PhD in sustainability!) but mass-market (meaning top models of cars like a Focus ST, not an AMG Merc) sports cars are year-on-year becoming just that bit more expensive to own.

I like it, still not keen on the grey front bit. The type R body kit is styled very similar to the old one. Turbo is nice, the Civic is evolving with the times!
