Having been "victim" of a bad wedding photographer myself (and not cheap either), I'd not recommend cutting corners in checking them out thoroughly, even with the short time frames involved.
Having seen plenty of good studio based work from them and being pretty naive, I've not got a whole bunch of shots that even I could do better at....
