Being a computer forum its safe to assume many people are into it, but I'm more concerned about those who don't. If you don't, why not? What do you do with your free time instead?

I ask as I don't spend much time anymore gaming the last few years, I've been off sick the last few days so decided to get the new gears of war and played it a fair bit....problem now is I feel like I've wasted hours of my life, not that I am capable of doing much else in my current state. However I still feel like a knob for not doing much else or anything remotely useful

im into computers, but not games..

playing a game all day is a wasted one imo

but not everyone plays games all day? I finished work at 9pm, watched a bit of TV, turned the PC on around 10pm, checked email and forums, played some BF3 beta and now I have Open TTD running and I'll be going to bed soon. Way to Stereotype. In fact I'd say the vast majority of people on here work so can't afford or even actually play games all day.

Off work? Buy Dragon Age. You'll waste hundreds of hours of your life but at least you'll waste them having fun.

Seriously. Don't think I've laughed as hard as the conversation when I explained to mates I was late for a pint because my elf was shagging a dwarf.

How is an hour spent gaming any more of a waste than an hour spent reading/watching TV/collecting stamps/*insert any other hobby here*?

I'm sure if you total up how long you go for a dump every day, it'll be a lot more of your life wasted than playing a game.

The only games I play are Fifa on the PS3 and Football Manager. With a very rare game of boxing etc.

Wouldn't consider myself a gamer.

I'm usually working, browsing the internet and exploring music in my spare time.

But reading them is still fundamentally 'useless'. Reading a novel, no matter how spectacular, for an hour accomplishes no more than an hour of gaming does. It entertains you, nothing else.

Ah, but books are different. Books have the power to change the way you think; give you a completely different perspective on life. Very few games, films, media, etc can do this. I'm not sure why but that is the case. Probably because most forms of media aim to entertain rather than educate.

(Examples include the Bible, War and Peace, 1984, etc)

Unless you think developing your mind is fundamentally "useless" in which case I'd call you a closet nihilist.

Anything can change anybodies life, its all dependant on what you are most receptive to. Very few books can change peoples lives either.

but surly these books have overtime caused more harm than any single computer game will.

in which case i'll vote books - bad. :p

especially those ones.

If someone's life and method of thought was changed by Gears of War they look like this:

Planescape: Torment.

Damn it I keep forgetting to play this.

I don't play games at all. Never been any good at them so never had any interest in them.

I do enjoy fiddling around with computers though and getting them to do things.

Haven't played computer games since I sold my Xbox 360 about 3 years ago. I haven't even owned a TV since then either.

I used to spend way too much time playing on games and it got in the way of other things.

Used to game all the time, but maybe 2 years ago stopped, and have barely touched anything since then. I'll play SSF4 at my mates on Xbox but I enjoy being there and the banter that goes with it, I don't enjoy it online.

All of my mates are getting BF3 when it comes out, and part of me wants to join in and see if I can get back into gaming, but the other part really can't be bothered.
