What is Using Up my PAYG Balance on my Samsung Galaxy S2

Hi Guys

Recently I bought a SIM free Samsung Galaxy S2 and transferred my Vodafone PAYG SIM into it. The phone seems to be eating through my TopUp balance even though I'm hardly using it and it's on WiFi most of the time anyway. This seems to be at about the rate of £20 per month, which is far from ideal.

Any ideas what is causing this and what I can do to prevent it?

Many thanks

Get something like 3g watchdog and see if data is being transferred when you are not on Wifi.
If the number goes up. You have something background syncing that you should be able to disable.

You sure you haven't used your monthly internet allowance? Check what your limit is with your provider and ask them how much you are using. I know O2 charge £1 a day once you have reached your limit.

The phone chewed through another £6 of data yesterday. The phone is on WiFi most of the day, so it's just the short time when it's away from WiFi that is causing the problem. As others have said, I think it is services updating that is causing the problem.

When I look in Applications / Running services, I have the following "running":

Settings
DRM content
Software update
SyncIDS
Market (Android Market)
Digital Clock

I guess I want to stop/disable Software update. When I go in to do this, I see "DM Service - Service started by application. Stopping service may cause application to fail".

Does anyone know if it's safe to stop the software update process?

Any other tips for getting a Samsung Galaxy S2 to stop chewing through my PAYG credit?

Thanks

I'm not sure what Android you're running or if Samsung put their own skin over it but when I went on holiday I went into Settings > Wireless & Networks > Mobile Networks and turned of Data Enabled and didn't get charged for internet usuage.

OK, I've checked that and I've got "Use packet data" and "Data roaming" disabled, so let's see if that will work.

Thanks

Get a GiffGaff SIM card, probably the best PAYG SIM to-date i reckon, for a smartphone anyway.

Pay £10 for unlimited data/text and 250 free minutes per month. Re-buy the Goodybag each month.

Goodybags contain better deals and you do not get usuable credit, just a subscription to the package.
