could you work these hours?

You think that is bad, the security work i do is 7 shifts in a row of 12hr shifts for only £6.09ph, then 4 days off rota works like this.

7 on 4 off
7 on 3 off
7 on 4 off
7 on 3 off

The 7 shifts is a combination of day and night.

Work's out about every 3rd weekend off. Being 24 the wage is rubbish but after being out of work for 6 months i am not complaining but like others have said look for another job but don't leave untill you do have another job.

Before the minimum wage was increased this month i only got £6.00 ph

There are so many worse jobs that you could have. This job is going to let you search for other jobs, write cvs, do some distance learning courses, all while being paid! Use all that spare time at work to your advantage

It's called a 168 pattern and is pretty standard..but that hourly rate is carp. I've been working security for 11 years now and December will be when i finally escape. If you want my advice, anything less than £8.00 ph is not acceptable and do not take a job with shifts longer than 12 hours.

This is an industry controlled by a corrupt government quango, that exists solely as a self-perpetuating money spinner for the Home Office. What other service industry requires you to pay £245 every three years, (more if you hold more than one license, which you would if you were a CCTV operator for example), just for the right to earn a living? Bear in mind too, that they will keep that money regardless of whether they issue the License to you or not! For every application they refuse they gain £245. Sound legit and au fait?

Not forgetting of course that there is no sick pay, so if you are injured carrying out your duties it's on you. Good luck paying the bills when you're laid up with a slipped disc!

And if anybody is under any illusion that you're somehow valuable and an asset, either to your own company, or for the client you are working for.. think again! A client doesn't need any good reason to get rid of you if they desire. It could be that they just don't like the way you look. I've known clients to ban the Contract Managers from site that they didn't like and insist on someone else. Think you'll get better treatment than your boss?

I'm actually on a great site now. Pay is average for the area, company and client are both great and the work is Mon-Fri, days only. Couldn't really ask for more...well, apart from the fact that the SIA is refusing to renew my License because of a police caution from eight years ago. Yes, that's right. They've granted it twice before, but this time they've decided that the 'offense' is more serious now than it was when it was committed??

So come December i'm unemployed. Oh that's right...the offense is so serious that it was ok for me to be working for the last 8 years, and it's ok if i continue to work for the next 3 months. Just not for the 3 years after that.

Yeah, work that one out!

So, yeah...glad to be getting out now tbh!

could you work these hours?

The first year i worked with my last company i averaged 75 hrs a week over the entire year. It was my first 30K year. (Net.)

Currently on a 60 hr pw, which seems easy in comparison. First ever security job was 48 hr weeks at £9 PH, which doesn't sound bad... until you realise that it's only 19K per annum. It's putting in the hours, and the ease of the job that makes it worth doing.

Self esteem, self respect and having a life are the trade-offs!

First night-shift i ever worked in Security, i had to refuse access to my own manager, and his boss to the building because the Client had taken a disliking to them! Rock and hard-place?

door licence.
merseyside.
you offering me a better job? lol
sorry only just seen the reply, dependent on whereabouts you are my company may have a venue near you, we are currently recruiting in the northwest, http://www.showsec.co.uk/work-for-us/apply.aspx
Casual contract so may not give you the reliability you're after, but definitely a better rate and hours. If you've got your door supervisor licence you should be getting a tenner for most work, minimum of 8ish for a permanent contract

Leave, no point spending your entire life doing that (with so little time in-between it really is most of your life).

You should be able to get something much better, as your on overclockers UK I assume you can use a PC half decently, that qualifies you for most office work.

In a year or two (max) office work you should be able to get at least £16k (at 37.5 hours per week) - that way you get to have similar amounts of money but still have a life.

It could be worse - at least the OP is not expected to drive during his shift!

As an example, I often do 15hours - 10 hours driving,1.5hrs break,3.5hours "Other work" have my legal minimum rest period which is 9 hours and then I can quite legally do the same all over again.

I can do this 3 times before I need a regular 11hour rest period.

All with 44tons behind me! Happy days.

As I say OP, it could be worse!

Become a bouncer, a friend was making ridiculous money in the centre of Bristol a few months back before moving to newcastle to live near his child.

I could work those hours.

Whether I would is a different matter. I value my social/family life too much to be tied to a job like that.

Work to live, not live to work!
