So how scratch resistant is the glass on the iPhones & iPads?

Are they a special scratch resistant glass?

Reason I ask, is I've always had screen protectors front and back on my 4, along with a bumper case. But the plastic gets hairline scratches quickly, and you can see the plastic distortion under certain lights. It kind of takes away from the experience.

I should have my 4S next week, and I'm wondering if I should bother with the screen protectors this time round?

I am anal about looking after it, and having owned an iPhone since the the 3, and never dropping, i think its fair to say i am a careful owner..

But without a screen protector, am I just asking for trouble? Or is the glass tuff enough to get away without getting hairline scratches unless abused? Such as in a quality watch? You can have one for years without the glass facia getting scratched.

Short answer - Very. I believe they use Gorilla Glass.

I've been carrying my unprotected iPhone 4 around for over 15 months and once you wipe off the fingerprints there isn't a mark on it. I won't be putting overpriced sticky back plastic on it.

If they were needed the Apple would be selling their own overpriced version instead of leaving it to snakeoil peddlars on the internet.

The iPhone and iPad use Gorilla Glass, it's very hard wearing and scratch resistant, I'm not sure about the process it goes through but it's a lot more scratch resistant than just ordinary glass.

I owned a first generation iPhone with the chrome bezel, I had this phone for about 3 years and in all it's time it was just stored in my jeans pocket by itself. The chrome bezel got a little marred by the material (well it is plastic after all) but the glass portion on the screen was perfect.

I did the key scratch test on my iPhone 4 the day it came out to refute someone's claims that it would scratch really easily. I did it really quite hard too, not a visible scratch!

I've managed to scratch mine so it's not impossible (it's also got a massive crack from an entirely unrelated drop too :p)

I have a few tiny scratches on my IP4 where my thumb swipes the screen when I scroll. This is due to me forgetting to cut my nails though.

As much as they are scratch resistant if it slides across the floor after falling out of your pocket in a car park it gives you a nice pair of chips, so i'd go with a 'cheap' screen protector off a auction site.

My GF's Iphone 4 has a few massive scratches down the side of it from being in her pocket with keys.. so its not that effective.

Why would you put your phone in your pocket with keys

I work with glass, and the glass on the iPhone 4 has impressed me.
