Petrol and diesel sales are plummeting as a result of high prices, research from the AA shows. And it’s costing the Government billions in tax revenue

blimey. if the govts aim was reduce emissions and fuel use, then it succeeded. if it was an exercise to drum up more revenue then it failed epically.

personally i cant say that im going through much less fuel

I'd be interested to see if the number of cars on the road has dropped, or if this is due to people driving more economically.

I've not given up my car, but I have started paying much more attention to the MPG. I can now eke about 350 miles from a tank, whereas a year or two ago I didn't really care as was getting ~290.

Quite a good chart here showing the fluctuations in how much of the forecourt price has been made up of taxes and duties in recent years.

I personally use my bike whenever I can now, not because it's crippling me, but because it's just getting ridiculous. I've also noticed that I'm far more willing to walk to the shops instead of take the car, though I'm not sure how things will change in the winter? I suspect demand will creep up again as people are generally more reluctant to venture out in colder weather. A lot of people making a small change has a big effect.

I drive a 1.2l Punto, and only get 32mpg.... Its so bad.

I wish petrol prices would just come down... Poor poor stuent lol

Thing is, the economy depends on tax from fuel, so if sales drop, the tax will just get moved around and added on somewhere else - so being "economical" with your car doesn't really save you anything, you still end up paying one way or another.

f that's around town then that's not so bad? Granted a 1.2 needs to be driven at higher revs to get /anywhere/ so would drink more fuel but still...

ive been quite belligerent with it, just carrying on buying regardless of cost. with it having such an impact on the govt i really may start cutting back as is surely it would hurt them more.

Yes it does, if you walk or take the bike more often of course it saves you something. One way or another, you pay less than you would if you'd used the car instead.

I've noticed petrol prices take a drop recently too. Unleaded was around 135 last week and this weekend prices were around 130. Keep going down I say!

This is a joke right? You probably see 350 miles from a tank? I remember my 1.2 Clio used to return great mileage, to the extent I wouldn't even dream about altering my driving style.

With the current ol' girl, the only thing I've cut down on are the Sunday jaunts with a pal to find some nice B roads and a pub.

I am personally paying more attention to MPG than I ever was. Have increased my tank average from 44/45 up to around 51mpg.

Working out it is saving me a couple of hundred quid a year and still get where I need to go.

I've dropped my fuel usage quite a bit. Instead of going for a hoon up the Hartside most weekends, i'll limit it to once a month. Only really filling up once a week at the minute, where it would have been three times a fortnight not too long ago.

Things will all change if I get the new car though haha

I have noticed recently how more people on the motorway are cruising at legal speeds, rather than 90 or so.

I'm doing my best to keep the stats up - gone through about 30 gallons of recreational petrol in the last couple of weeks - ie used for the sole purpose of riding / driving for the sake of it, including a trackday and a 6am hoon :)
