i5 2500k vs Phenom II x4 - For gaming

Though if you were buying a Phenom II then the only one you'd look at is the 955, no point spending extra on the 980.

at end of day its budget and what you want .

955 will play everything no problem . the intel is obviously faster but also double the price so thats why.

Infatic response, thank you.

I'm going to be running a 3gb GTX 580.

This is a back up plan incase I don't go for a bull dozer. But I'm just not sure whether I should settle for the i5 2500k or if it's worth stretching to the i7 2600k

From what I have seen the i5 is better for gaming i7 better for workstations. So depends a lot on what you are using the system for.

Considering a similar problem but going to wait and see what bulldozer brings and the possible knock on effects to prices.

If the rig is purely for gaming then you will see very little to no benefit in getting the 2600k over the 2500k - there are very few games that utilise hyper-threading, the only one I know of is GTA IV, and even then its an increase of 2-4 FPS.. not worth the extra cost imo.

Unless OP has an AM3 board already and fancies a cheap drop in upgrade, the i5 is defiantly the way forward. BD is looking pretty meh :(

What do you mean? ^^

I have a Asus Sabertooth 990FX board so it's AM3+ compatible.

But by the sounds of it I should be looking at the 2500k Sandy bridge.

Bulldozer is looking bad.
As told ages ago when you were looking at what board to buy, you should have went socket 1155.

For your sabertooth, all you have to look forward to is an FX8150.

I'd personally wait for BD results to come in, could be a relatively cheap upgrade on your current board and offer around Intel i5 results. Considering how close they are it'd be daft to buy anything right now, there's less than a week to wait of BD!

As a complete upgrade the Intel route would be more costly and you'd really struggle to see the difference.

So is the Intel i5 2500k incompatible with the Asus Sabertooth 990fx board?

If so and I'm forced to go AMD then would I not be wise to just buy the Black Phenom 3.7 ghz? Or is there a chance there will be a better BDs for gaming.

just wait for the true results of BD to come in which could be a few days and then make a decision espeecialy as you have spent so much money on a AM3+ board.

Indeed.

You made the wrong choice.

No they are entirely different sockets and chipsets hence I suggest you wait a few days to see how the AMD Bulldozer results look, it's quite possible they will perform inline or at least close to the i5 2500k and be slightly cheaper.
