I've just had a phone call from "Windows operating system" about my computer. It must have only recently gained sentience, because it was having a bit of trouble with speech and speech recognition. It sounded remarkably like someone for whom English was a foreign language that they were not completely fluent in.

1471 drew a blank, unsurprisingly. Is there any point reporting the scam to anyone?

"Hello"
"This is your OS speaking"
"What"
"I need your password, ip address and windows key"
"**** Off!"

Good morning, sir. I'm calling from Internet Service Providings. Would you be interested in switching your internet service providings to a provider that provides a better service of internet service providings than your current providings?

How can people fall for this? Seriously?

Gilly, I'm not picking at your uncle mate, but I have heard it so many times...

Are we talking about those guys who pretend to be MS technical support? I've had a good 3 or 4 of these in the last month. 1 of them I hung up on and he actually rang back... twice! They clearly don't employ these guys for there quick thinking. They actually asked me if I was using a Mac OS which would beg the question, why are MS ringing up about it ><

Had 1 yesterday so I kept him talking for 5 minutes. He was insisting we had a problem with our windows operating system so I kept asking him which OS in particular it was as we have 3 of them and I'd prefer to narrow it down. Apparently the error reporting just gives an address and doesn't contain any details about the OS, so I couldn't help but ask him how he could possibly help me fix the error if he didn't know what OS I was using.
He told me to fix it myself and hung up, job done :D

don't bother reporting it, waste of time tbh, best thing you can do is just troll the caller to death for giggles lol ;p

What OS? How did it sound? I've always reckoned Windows 7 would have a Baritone Barry White voice and Vista would have a Darth Vader 'do as i say or i choke you' voice.

It's free service that costs £18 a month, then £22 a month, then £80 a month (queue elephant noise). Hahaha :D

best thing to do with these guys is to troll them. Last month i went through a cycle of getting on or two a week. If you hung up they called back, you have to give them 10/10 for effort.

I had the same thing were they couldnt tell me what Os i was using, so everytime they ask i tell them i am running linux, or ubuntu ect, and they still carry on with the script they have. Longest call i got was 10mins, and after i hung up he called back!!

I used to work for an ISP and the amount of people who fall for this sort of stuff, or nearly fall for this sort of scam is actually quite high...
