ISPs to offer facility to block access to pornography

Not in the same way there is against porn.

Are we going to block CSI Miami as well?

No it not the same, it's down to social morality(if that's the correct word), people see violence as fake and staged, easily discernible from real life. I don't even really see it as a double standard.
Bit again it's not forced, so it is totally down to parents and a lot of younger parents do not have the same morals as the national average.

It's like people think this is forced, or something's actually changed.

As for csi Miami. There's already strict rules on tv shows, as well as water shed and a well established complaint and review service.

Are you saying pornography isn't staged and discernible from real life? The difference is the content and how sex is somehow more taboo than death. If you took a James Bond film and after having him kill 100s of people and blow up a base killing 100s more, then had a sex scene with the bond girl at the end, you can guarantee it would be the sex scene that would cause an outrage for absolutely no reason.

I am glad somebody gets my point :p

Of course. Morality as a nation is different to ones own. Again it's not being forced, it's still a total option and it's not new. What we would do or find right, is very different to our grandparents.

So what's the problem or double standards?

Do you think morality and laws will be the same in 50 years time when our or mote likely generation below is in power.

Tech changes, morals change and laws are continually changed to reflect this.
Do you think there will be anywhere as much call for ban on violent video games when the gamer generation get in power. The modern console has spread gaming to all demographics, just like porn is acceptable to most of the younger generations.

Or not. Sex scene != porn. To compare the two would be like comparing a film with murder to gore.

Let's get lost in the technical rubbish and again miss the point.

Why is society so anti naked people but seemingly not bothered about death and violence? Where are the calls to block other content?

They're ignored because those claims (anti-video games) are silly... and that content generates billions of pounds.

You could argue that death in games/movies isn't real too. I'm sure the response would be just as great if kids were getting their hands on gore.

Plus there are huge variations in porn... it's not all 'naked people'. Without going into too much detail, you can get a lovely 1girl1guy scene where everything's beautiful or you can get the complete opposite which most would say is very unsuitable for young people.

Hence the requirement for education rather than forced blocking!

Is there any evidence that watching/looking at porn does any damage? The only reason there are so many people against it is that society for some reason sees it as a taboo subject. Enforcing this block is just going to worsen that taboo.

I should clarify my stance - I don't think games should be banned, I am using it to highlight why censorship is often illogical.

It's not censorship, it's not banned, it's not even a opt out service.

It is a tool for parents or anyone else for a service they pay for. It is no more a censorship, than a parent refusing to buy a kid a game.

Is there really a problem with teenagers who are old enough to want to look at porn actually looking at it? I certainly don't think so.

Anyway, I've recently had to move back home (at 27). I don't want to be asking my Dad to unblock the porn. :p

He'll have already unblocked it ;)

Ah so you're saying its all about the money? The game industry generates a large amount of money so therefore they cannot be censored while the porn industry is smaller scale so can be?

A sex scene is just as close to porn as they can get without 'crossing a line'. Yes there is a huge difference between 1 on 1 porn and a gangbang but there is also a difference between all the violence and death portrayed in films/games too. Infact between the 2, a sex scene that has some connection to reality and the generic death scene of some random grunt who get shot by 1 bullet and immediately drop dead with no blood, I'd say the latter has the potential to be more damaging by completely detaching reality from the situation.

The whole thing is a gigantic double standard. If they offer the facility to block porn why don't they offer the facility to block violence and death? Is watching some girl take it from behind considered more damaging than someone watching the video of Saddams execution?

Totally different debate and nothing to do with this thread.

Well, actually it's a very much related debate and completely to do with this thread.

They're both government sponsored censorship, and if you can't see how the two are connected and that one could very easily lead to the other then unfortunately it looks like those of us who can are in for a very difficult time. :(

Edit:

It isn't forced blocking, it's nothing of the sort. So why even say it.

You seem to be making a lot of posts without actually responding to any of the points made.

It's currently opt-in blocking (except on mobile phones which are now opt-out)
The government has proposed it should be opt-out blocking - IMO it's only a matter of time before this goes through, largely because of the fact that the majority of people (such as yourself) don't seem to see the implications
The next logical step is compulsory blocking - at which point it becomes a downward spiral

How can you not see where this is going?

how is it a double standard, for a start it is two totally different things, also seen as having different media formats. It also is more or less built around morals, which aren't based on a lot. Those morals are different for violence and porn. Although there are a large portion, who would love to see both fully banned.

It's not the same at all and it's not government based law.
Do you actually realise what the op is about?

There's been a porn filter for years. On ISP it's usually disabled, on phone networks it's usually enabled by default. All 4 ISPs have agreed to is asking if you want it or not at sign up. It has nothing to do with censorship or being forced.

If you want to discuss what if and other purposes laws then fine. But it's has no relation to the op. And you'll find I would more than likely have a different outlook.

But your arguments are toty invid in relationship to the op.

All about? No. Clearly not :p But the fact it generates huge amounts of money will no doubt make the decision. There's a ton of protests over that very point going on right now in the US.

I wouldn't think either of those could be damaging. I'm not even sure what you're trying to say really.

One can only assume death and gore would be blocked too.
