MX-5 advice — heart or head?

My parents are unexpectedly returning to the UK early which means the E60 has to be returned. :(

My girlfriend and I still need two cars and so, to complement the recent Mondeo purchase, we're thinking about getting an MX-5 and becoming a true OcUK cliché. :D

As this is going to be the fun car, and mostly driven by my girlfriend, we sort of had out hearts set on metallic green with tan leather interior.

We have a budget of about £3k but she won't buy a car without airbags, so it has to be a MK2 or 2.5. Unfortunately, this colour combination seems to be rarer than rocking horse poo for the MK2s. There are loads of MK1s but non have airbags.

I have found one, which is a 1999, 1.8 SE with 92k on the clock for £2,695. Apparently there were only 500 of these made which explains the limited availability.

However, if we forget about the colour, the world becomes our oyster. We could get a green MK2.5 with black leather interior and with half the mileage for a few hundred quid more but this is really boring.

Alternatively, we could get a 2004 Euphonic (metallic grey with black and red two-tone leather) with half the mileage, again for a few hundred pounds more.

So what would you do? Get the older, higher mileage version that's the perfect colour combination or compromise on aesthetics for a newer, lower mileage example?

I realise I sound like a complete girl saying "I want a green one" and I'm aware that we could go and look at the one I've found and it could turn out to be a complete lemon but it's a real case of heart says one thing, head says another.

The Euphonic is the MX5 I nearly bought a few years back, IMO nothing else comes close to it in terms of looks for the MK2.5.

The seats and wheels alone are enough to justify it over any other Mk2/2.5 MX5 IMO.

For the MX-5 there are only 2 options that combine air bags, green paint and tan interior:

The (99) SE : http://www.mx5-3rdgenerationlimited.com/se(99).htm which was a limited run of 500.

The Montana : http://www.mx5-3rdgenerationlimited.com/montana.htm which was a limited run of 500, with only 250 being sold with green paint.

You will be severely limiting your choices holding out for one with that specific combination.
If your parents returning home early means you don't have much time to find a 2nd car, then that also works against you.

As long as you can live with the colour, go for the best you can find bodywork wise and mechanically. You can just sort the interior to your tastes further down the line. Mine doesn't have leather seats, but I'm having too much fun to give a crap. :D

MX-5 isn't the only option for that criteria, the 2.2l Z3 is also worth a look.. The 4 pot version is pretty underpowered, the non-bored out i6 however is a blast. Pick the 2.2 over the 2.0, 22 more horses for similar money. 2001, 80-100,000 miles, probably £3k? Airbags included! :D

By the green one and stick a tan interior in when one comes up for sale on the owners club and sell the black interior.

Or

Buy the green one and put a message on the owners club and ask if anyone would like to straight swap the awful tan interior for a nice black one.

Bear in mind green is a very unpopular colour should you ever wish to sell it. I love it, but a swine to offload.

All good shouts so far, I'll show my girlfriend this thread tonight.

Apart from being 'newer so it's better', is there anything that stands out on the MK2.5 over the 2?

I personally think the MK2.5 is a much better looking car than the normal MK2. The changes are only minor but it just seems to finish it off nicely.

Ok did I read you want to get an older car with double the mileage because it has tan seats and green paintwork ?
WHAT THE **** ?

Which is why it's such a heart/head decision.

It's a rare version, it's under budget and it's the exact combination we're looking for.

However, if we were being totally rational, the idea would get your reaction every time.

It's a bit like Fox wanting an M5 in Estoril blue with cream interior.

To be fair I dont really think fox would go for double the mileage do you ?

This is definitely sounding like your "heart" is making your "head" go crazy ???????

You're probably right. The cost is also a factor though. It's not as those the 99 car and the 04 car are the same price, in which case I would definitely agree with you.

The Euphonics I've been looking at are about £3,200 — £3,500 so at least £500 more, probably £700 or £800.

I know £800 isn't a lot in the grand scheme of things but it is pushing the budget.

We could get the older car, have £300 of our budget left and be an extra £500 better off.

Just a consideration.

Little bump:

The hunt had to take a back seat for a while but is now back on with a vengeance.

Thinking about a 10th Anniversary edition as it comes with 6-speed gear box, LSD and Bilstein Shocks (which makes me happy) and it's a pretty colour with pretty interior (which makes my girlfriend happy).

Just wanted to see what people thought about this model?

I'd always prioritise the condition of the car over a specific colour combination (although I might discount one I didn't like). Preferred the MX-5 interior in black without any bling personally when I had one as some of the coloured interiors didn't seem to wear that well.

Certainly wouldn't pay a premium for a UK special edition, unlike some of the Japanese models they tended to be more colour combinations than special equipment.

6-speed gearbox isn't quite as nice to use as the 5-speed.

You'll pay a premium price for a 10AE over a regular Mk2 (or even Mk2.5 if it's a good one).

Make sure it's a good one, and try to get one with all the extras it came with from the factory (hard top, certificate, model car, his and hers watches, floor mats) as without those it's just a regular Mk2 with different paint work, LSD, 6 speed and Bilstein.

I ended up going for a Mk2.5 Sport as the price difference was negligible (I paid £3.7k for a 53, Silver, full Mazda service history, 12 MOT, 6 Tax, 70k miles). IMO the Mk2.5 1.8 is a big improvement over the Mk2, small details but they add up, especially on the Sport where you get the LSD, 6 Speed, Bilsteins, heated leater, mohair roof etc.
